Diesel how fast

Hi All

Would like to know how fast perkins and mazda series land rovers are - maybe that should be how slow are they. I know that the three cylinder perkins will be very slow and that maxda should be a good improvement but dont have any specific info.

I have a 71 2a trayback with I'm told a 165 perkins automotive four cylinder which is probably very close to the early mazda 2700

Anyway any and all information will be appreciated

fozzy maxes at about 105kph and you know each andevery one of them from the noise (2.25 rover NA diesel)

80 kph is comfortable for it.

Id suggest that as the engines are of the same vintage design that the noise levels will be about the same and it will come down to the individual tweaks of the engines

Perkins 3 and 4 are quite often maxed out at 2200RPM, so that is excrusciatingly slow in a series with 4.7:1 diffs. Won't use much diesel but, when compared to a petrol one

Another question for you blknight but does fozzy have a ute tub and if so does it have the taillight surrounds and if the answers are yes to the above does it have three lights in the taillight surround? The reason i ask is i have such a tub in CAA yellow.

Marko, by Mazda you mean the Mazda - Perkins motors? They shared lots of similarities as they were manufactured by Mazda under licence AFAIR but the injector pump was a little more modern and was a bit more vehicle oriented than machinery and tractor oriented than the perky.

I'd imagine the Mazda derivative would be a little better suited in that case due to higher governed engine speeds.
In the UK the Perkins Prima was the engine of choice for series vehicles, IIRC it was OHC and revved a lot harder. I think there was even a turbo version?
My memory isn't the best, could be a little fuzzy on the details, either way they were legendary for their robustness and reliability, and fuel economy. They just didn't go very fast

yes, no,no...

the surrounds at one stage were an optional extra and are pretty much a bolt up item.

given that rivet counting in a rover is a near impossable hobby I gave up trying to work out what bits went where and when and just concentrate on getting whats there actually working....


I thought the perkins were good to 3800rpm tho. 2K rpm in a stock series would be all of about 75 kph

Thanks for the replies guys was just sitting here and thinking about it and realised i have a mazda 3 litre as well but it has the alloy rocker cover. I guess i should check the bolt patterns and starter motor positions etc and see if i can swap them around, if not i guess the perkins will have to do

I'm trying to decide what to build at the moment, but was thinking along the lines of 2a military chassis with perkins engine and salisbury rear end with a truck cab and the option of a hardtop or just going trayback and maybe getting some spring tips off isuzurover

If anyone has any better ideas please let me know

Whats wrong with a 200Tdi? I would have thought that fitting one of those would be alot less hassle as they have an almost identical bellhousing bolt pattern + parts are easier to come by

If you are going to that much trouble of swapping drivetrains around why not upgrade the whole lot?
