    Namoi Carp Muster

Over the weekend a few of us got together and participated (in varying degrees ) in the Namoi Carp Muster. (The idea was to remove carp from the Namoi river system). This was held around Nundle on the Peel River and the waters of Chaffey Dam.

Registration was $5, for this you got breakfast and lunch on Saturday and Sunday, a stubbie holder, cap, drink bottle and other literature.

Weather over the weekend was just about perfect for a fish and swim in the dam.

After a bit of hunting around for some of the deeper holes, it was time to wet a line.

It wasn't long before the first fish was taken. With 7 rods out there was a rush to get them in as Numpty had a decent fish on the hook. With his rod bent through 180 under the boat, the carp managed to head around the anchor rope, then the outboard leg, not sure how it didn't cut the line, but after snapping the last 150mm off the end of the rod the fish was hauled into the landing net. At the same time the last remaining line in the water took off.

    Numptys fish weighed in at 4.6?Kg - 65cm, Chenz's at 5kg 67cm

Soon had another ~5kg on the hook

Running ouit of space and ice in the esky it was time to head off for the weigh in and get some lunch - Steak/sausage sandwich.

To cap off a great day a few beers and a feast on roast beef, roast pork, veges and fruit salad desert

Sunday saw one of the group take out a prize of $100+ voucher for fishing gear, so overall a great weekend.

Beautiful spot there. When we were kids we had our own form of carp muster but it involved - shotguns, armalite (i kid you not), 30/06, 44magnum, 357 magnum, 22/250, steel rakes, compound bow, crossbow . We had a 20 acre sized billabong on our 400 acres on the murray and when the water level dropped we'd go out and kill the carp.

The carp are a pest species which are illegal to return to the water. On the weekend there were 440 persons registered for ther competition and over 700kg of carp caught.

I have tried numerous ways to cook them - there have been threads on this topic. They are crap. If you like the taste of lard wrapped in soap then this is the fish for you. They dirty up waterways, eat native fish eggs and are a general bad inhabitor of our rivers

The fish that were weighed in were iced down and taken to a firm that processes them into fish meal that they feed to chickens etc.

A great well run comp which I will be attending next year. As you can see from the photos my boat and crew had a great time and the rods certainly got a workout. Numpty even won a $165 voucher for fishing tackle which he can use to replace the rod that the big carp he caught broke the tip on.

People that tell yopu carp don't fight haven't caught ones over 4kg. The ones we caught went psycho when hooked and peeled off plenty of line.

Thanks Bushie for the great photos and Numpty for the invite to Nundle.

Carp sell for ~e10/kg in germany (AU$15/kg).

I once saw a cooking show by Stefano de Pieri (sp?) where he went out on the murray with a carp fisherman and then showed how to prepare it. He only used ~1/3 of the fillet.
