Sounds like you need a chipped Td5 110 Defender.
Pretty simple, good on fuel, more torque than a V8, strong diffs and axles (To a point, but easily upgraded) and a bulletproof chassis etc.
AND you can virtually hose it out

Hey guys,
Ok so heres the thing i need a new 4wd and i only want it for offroading...i have had to retire my p38 range. (p38 thread)
now im looking into getting all different makes and models of 4wd im not staying with landrover...i still might get a landrover just not sure.
here is what im trying to achieve..small maintence ie.cheap parts, i want something that i can easily put a 4" lift on and big mud tires. i also want something that is half decent with fuel economy which isnt really a must as ill only be taking it off road.
however one thing that is a must..A STRONG DIFF! and must have a little bit of power to get me through things.
i like the thought of a turbo diesel..but thats probably because ive never owned one. also i like basic so electronics is a luxury if its there yay but if not then im not gonna cry over spilt milk
kindest Regards,
Mike
p.s ill still be keeping the p38 ill just be making it into a touring vehicle.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
so that'd be a series with a new donk, A county with a turbo, a perentie Or a deefer out to about 2002/early03 then.
ok seriously
what size are you looking for, how much effort do you want to make and what do you want to spend?

For my 2 bobs worth - and remembering this is a LR site
I would suggest a Late D1, auto with tdi. _ pick up a nice one for say 10 grand
Front and rear lockers.
Strengthened axles
2 inch body lift
2 inch spring lift.
Cut guards
Get the tdi worked - - you get more out of it. (Intercooler etc)
Depending on how "basic" you want to go, you could also think about a County Isuzu or 300tdi Defender.
Lots of options though![]()
ok shoulda been more specific my price range is around 8k....i really only want to use it as an offroad thing.

Pretty much that
I'd be looking to buy something built to be honest
Actually a mate of mine will be selling a GQ shorty on 35's, fresh auto and 355 stroker, 10:1, balanced etc....may need to chip a few more k in, but its sorted
Alot of tough rangies sell for that figure and less, just wait for something to pop up
Defender 300Tdi Trayback Ute (alloy tray)
(1) Electrickery proof Turbo Diesel (You can tweak the pump and add a bigger intercooler)
(2) Fuel Economy / Range
(3) Cheap Parts
(4) Hardly any panels to damage
(5) Bush ready
(6) Within Budget
(7) Salisbury Rear Diff - include strengthened axles & flanges + difflocks if you like.
(8) Light weight / full size
(9) Excellent Suspension / Articulation *
(10) A trayback is an easy configuration for a off-road only vehicle, it allows easy access to under the vehicle (with room for water tanks etc), it allows dirty recovery gear to be easily thrown on.
* You may need to rethink the 4" lift. A Defender has so much axle articulation that 2" is heaps. More than that, it gets more expensive to get longer shocks, trailing arms etc. 2" also make it insurable. If you want a 4" lift, why not consider a 110 on air bags, you can keep the standard height to access, egress, loading and getting under fallen trees, and you can pump it up to 4" when required. That way the taller suspension settings won't affect on-road handling.
