Diesel gas 300 tdi findings

I just had my diesel gas fitted by a member on here Bee utey.

He has devised a simpler and more cost effective way that comes in at same cost of current rebate.
I highly recommend it.

I have just come back from a trip to Moonta with it fitted and my findings are as follows.
Fuel consumption for diesel 9l/100 down from 10.5-11L
Gas consumptiopn approx 2.5-3L/100.

I also had a EGT gauge fitted and found that temp has increased by approx 15 degrees on the flat to 30 degrees when loaded up on hills.

The power has increased by I would estimate 15-20%.
I had no dyno so far but going by acceleration up hills compared to when I turn the gas off.

All in all, I would say it has been a very worth while installation.
The gas bottle holds 19L and will do a tank of diesel and fits very well under the drivers side.

The extra power is right in the torque range where needed and pulling my trailer, 3 people and dog aboard with air-con on, the EGT reads 340 degree.
On hills it climbs to 640 and when really pushed to 680-700 degrees for short times.
When I switch gas off, car drops back very noticeably and temp does drop but very little.

Guys, get it done, those from interstate, come over just to get the install.
Its worth the trip.

I've had D/Gas on my Tdi for 12 months and would not have one without it,the responsiveness,torque and all over improved driveability makes it worth every cent.My EGT's are the same as yours,a slight increase but the coolant temp and cylinder head temp haven't increased at all. Pat

It would be an interesting exercise to arrange a dyno day as a trip for members on here. It's a pitty we're all spread around the country. I've been thinking about doing it as a club trip in LROCV if I get the time to organise it.
It wouldn't be a ''''mine's better than yours'''' day. I just think it would be a fun thing to do with a good variety of Landys, standard and modified.
I know within the club we would have.......Diesel/gas Tdi, Diesel/gas Isuzu, Turbo Isuzu, Chipped Td5's, Allisport VNT Tdi, etc etc etc, as well as all the standard engines to compare to.
I wonder if anyone has a portable 4 wheel dyno.

Great idea, a little hard to organise though.
If and or when I get around it I will do a dyno and share figures, for now, it just goes so well, figures mean very little as its just right.

I have just purchased a 1998 300TDI Disco for my wife. It has 225000km on the clock and had a D-Gas installed February 2009.

I asked the previous owner if he felt the D-Gas had made much of a difference. He felt that around town/general driving there was no major difference and felt that he may have been changing gears 250-500rpm earlier, but said that also could be just be the way he drives it too. He said he noticed a difference when he towed his camper trailer, and thought that the engine didn't have to work as hard as it did previously.

Now we're on our 3rd tank of Diesel in the car. The first we used with Gas and went off road in sand tracks, we got just under 700km with 70km off road. I was quite happy with that result.

Second tank was Diesel only. I find the car goes quite well once the turbo is wound up. It sits nicely on 110km with power enough to accelerate to over take with out having to downshift. Not used to the lag before the turbo kicks in though. I filled up on Friday. It took 78 Litres, and traveled 666km. So we got 11.7L/100km Not the best figures I don't think.

Third tank is in there now and running it with Gas also. I have noticed no power gains what so ever. This is just driving at 3000rpm and turning the gas on and off.

What I'm thinking of doing is some timed runs. 400 meters from a standstill 5 times with Gas on. Then again with Gas off. The five times is to get an average. Then do a 1km stretch up hill Gas on then Gas off. Same thing, do this 5 times to get an average.

I think it would be quite interesting if others with Gas systems did this also. It's a bit more factual than the 'it feels to go better' scenarios that I've been finding on the net since looking into how others have found their systems.

At 3000rpm, you probably gone past the power-torque band also.
Try at 2000 rpm and put foot down and see what happens.

When I started researching diesel gas enhancement there were two schools of thought amongst the equipment suppliers. Half set their equipment up for the power boost as well as economy (to get economy you have to remember to back off when you turn on the gas!) , the other half reduce the gas flow at full throttle so as to never overload the engine, potentially voiding warranty.

So when I started to experiment I tended to go for the first option, and let the owner know its up to him to resist temptation and blow up his motor. However it is quite easy to set up this simple type of system to limit full power, you just need another microswitch on the throttle to cut gas flow at full throttle. This I have done on naturally aspirated engines diesel anyway, as extra fuel under load only creates black smoke in buckets!

I think the D-gas setup runs a separate ECU so should be able to be tweaked by the fitter. One system that doesn't run an ECU is the Eco-Shot system, fitting one of those pointed me in the direction I am working now. The Eco-Shot regulator cost me $1600; the device I use is worth about $220 new and the result is much the same.

For optimum results with LPG I suspect a small increase in turbo boost would help, and possibly reducing the injector pump maximum setting, otherwise only black smoke will result. Big Guy's EGT meter is a first for me, and gives valuable warning for potential engine damaging conditions. I would recommend one for any serious turbo-diesel owner.

Having now done 7 turbo diesels and 2 atmo's, (none of which have blown up) it seems that there is no good reason to turn the gas off, unless you are saving some to help you over a big hill far away... One guy asked me How Much to double up his gas supply to match his long range diesel tank, I told him to carry a 9kg bottle and adaptor hose. Not only could he cook the snags, he could use it to extend his range!

I've had mine dynoed,there is a thread on here about it.With my Tdi I can switch the gas on and off and notice it straight away,there is no mistaking weather it works or not.My system feeds gas into the intercooler outlet and runs a 35 thou jet,I would recommend it to anyone. Pat

What is the current rebate worth (ie how much did is cost ?)

I have big plans for my 300 Tdi and had originally written off the idea of D-Gas because of the cost.

I may possibly be travelling over to SA later this year for a holiday.
