BSF bolts in Brisbane and Sweetpea.

Have just come back from a very successful outing to Boltmasters at 457 Lytton Rd Morningside and came home with an assortment of BSF bolts and nuts suitable to replace the missing and broken ones encountered on the rebuild of Sweet pea's engine.
A very slow procedure at the moment as the PO had stripped the motor down to redo the rings before onselling due to health problems and now I am left with the jigsaw puzzle of finding all the bits and putting them back together. All this is happening in the back of my trailer so I am really having great fun.

I have had the basic short motor rebuilt with a crankshaft grind, new bearings, new rings etc, now I simply have to refit all the ancillaries, then eventually put it back into the (will be by then) painted chassis. Then the rest and more fiddly bit begins.

A new door skin is already half constructed as it had suffered badly over the years and cracked from top to bottom, but I am cheating in that I am not going to spot weld the skin, rather sikaflex the whole thing back together.

    All coming along slowly.
I am on the lookout for ONE piece that I have lost recently (not my fault though, unfortunately out of my control) and that is the special brass collared nut that fastens the oil filler neck to the side plate on a 1.6 engine. If anyone has a spare one floating around I know where there is a most gracious recipient living!!
    Regards
    Glen

Drive past them at least twice daily in my ten minutes between home and work.

Can they do them in the correct finishes, or didn't you bother?

I have been considering some of the full vehicle kits including all clips from the UK for my 107" jigsaw, but would much prefer to source something locally.

Good to see Sweatpea coming along.

Try Bruce Gardner, B.S.F. Bolts, 0408 056 255, fax 03 9512 0936. Bruce carries stocks of BSW, BSF, BSC, BA fasteners as well as BA taps and dies, even some left hand.

I am surprised that Boltmasters keep BSF. Must be old stock. Most fastener dealers dont keep any of the obsolete systems. Most of their staff were not even born when BSF, BSC, BA were last in common use.

Didn't really bother with any finer details as they are the first ones I have come across in excess of two days of phone calls that even had the threads so I am just happy to have found some bolts.
The thermostat housing on the front of the head had been fitted with a couple of throttle linkage bolts before (with an extra 1/2 inch or so of thread on the outer side of the bolt head!) so really anything is an improvement.
Beside if the real bits pop up later there is no reason that I can't change them over at a later date.
Personally I would much rather buy locally than from O/S sources on the internet any day, even if the price is a little bit higher (which in this case I don't feel that it was.) Also picked up a mob of BSF 5/16 nuts that will come in handy as a lot of the old ones have become pretty stressed over the past 60 years or so. (like some of my parts!)
Had an Irish burglar (Thanks Harry) call in today whilst I was gallivanting round chasing bits and he left me a nice aluminium plate to cover the hole where the choke warning light thermostat fits at the rear of the head. My original one had corroded through and was allowing water in direct contact with the switch mechanism. If I can find another good thermostat housing in the future I can refit it, or perhaps weld it, but at the moment I reckon I can do without a choke warning light for the time being.
Tomorrow the flywheel, clutch and starter motor go on then the engine is pretty well finished except for the dizzy which is still waiting for a leather/felt washer.
I must admit that things are a lot easier since I bought a nice new set of whitworth sockets from Tool City in Coopers Plains. Been putting up with a worn out set of old spanners for years now so the new set is definitely well worth it.
Sorry for the blatant ads but I feel that they may be well in context in this section of Aulro seeing we are talking old Series vehicles with their pre metric eccentricities.
Have now sourced nearly all my lighting requisites fairly locally, got to organise a weekend drive now to pick them up!

If I had known anyone needed them, I could have put 5/16" BSF nuts on Markets. I acquired a box of 5,000 and sold them at swap meets in cliplock bags of 20 for $2. All gone now.

I stock BSF taps from 3/16" to 5/8" and dies from 3/16" to 1/2". I have a few sizes of left hand BSF taps. All taps are intermediate lead with a few sizes also available in bottoming lead. Both taps and dies are high speed steel.

Tyron Saunders, "Jeckle", 07 3348 9859, usually has a selection of Whitworth hand tools..

For Lucas stuff, contact Kev. Baker , the Lucas (and much else) man, KB Classic Parts, 07 5494 4221 fax 07 5494 4114. When Kev moved from Carina to Maleny he took thirteen x three ton truck loads of parts up the mountain.
