    The Missing Link

Some weeks ago, we visited a very important person in the history of Land Rover.
His name is Arthur Goddard and he is the Land Rovers' first Engineer.

After reading a newspaper article that we'd sent him on the ground-up restoration of our S2A 88", Arthur had invited us to visit him.
It was an honour to do so.
Our conversation with him and his son Chris was most interesting as the fascinating information on the early developmental years of Lode Lane, Solihull, flowed. All with tea and tea-cake, of course.
Arthurs' memory of those early years of the Series Land Rover is sharp and clear.

Arthur, a gentleman as you'd expect, delighted in inspecting our S2A. And, of course, we felt priviledged to be in his company.

You can read Arthurs'story in the book by author Michael Bishop:
'THEY FOUND OUR ENGINEER' - The Story of Arthur Goddard, the LAND ROVERS' first Engineer.
    ISBN: 978-1-4567-7758-6

Yes Arthur lives and still works here in Brisbane. LRO53 caught up with him and wrote the fantastic book you mention. It is great to have such a remarkable man in our midst.

With his permission,I would love to make him the Patron of Slow.

Well done Harry's, and good to see he is still intersted in our landies after all these years.

I think it would be a fantastic thing to have Arthur Goddard as our patron. Let us pursue this fine idea, can you take this on, Michael?

Last I checked this is the general chat section of a Series Land Rover Owners Club. What you would like to do with your own club would probably be best discussed within your own area. Feel free though to join in any discussions regarding Series Land Rovers.

Wouldn't be like the GCLRO pushing it's own barrow in other sections of the forum would it

Arthur Goddard was LR's first engineer and as such, was intimately connected with Series Land Rovers.

Mr.Goddard had no historical connection whatsoever with "discos and rangies.

As a new club , SLOW is developing it's "personality" - part of that is our love of our connection to the historical past, which is why the association of Mr. Goddard with SLOW, the only Series specific Land Rover club in Australia, is in my opinion appropriate.

    Thank-you,

And you can only do what you can do, when you can do it.

Yes Dan, Arthur was an engineer who brought about the substance for our hobby, the series 1 and it's development through to the later versions, on the back of which the rest of Series Land Rovers evolved from. He was part of the team which basically got it right at the start, has spent his life involved with engineering vehicle components and is within our midst. He left Land Rover in 1956.

If anyone is not sure who he is and his connection with Land Rover

    sorry.
i didn't realise you didn't have a sense of humour.

no inference of pushing barrows intended,
and it wasn't a gclro club comment,
    i said it.

i grew up in a world where if you couldn't say something nice about someone, you said nothing.

    i said nothing.
