    Chad and roads

For those that remember the story i was relating about the client of mine that worked on roads and he reckoned they did 300 miles in one day..

he dropped around again yesterday so i quizzed him some more

he is french, and he was working for a french contractor in chad.

they had to top dress parts of an existing road, get some tar on it in places and it was in a known problem area so they wanted to get thru it as quickly as possible.

they took a month to get the materials in place with armed escorts from the french military by the sounds of it

must have been winter as he was on about them having a heap of trucks with tanks of tar on them that they lit fires under to keep molten

he cant remember how many trucks were involved but he reckons the convoy / work party was over 5 miles long and they had some massive trucks he had never seen before that were brought in just for the task.

he has some photos somewhere and is going to try and find them..

i have trouble getting my head around how they hell they could do so much in one day but he swears blind they did it...

i always thought the french had metric so asked him whether it could have been 300 km but he was adamant it was miles

he didn't do any more with that mob as he reckons they were too harsh...

he went to new guinea then and worked on roads etc there till he retired..

got some great stories and hopefully some good pics.

loves his landrovers but was not fussed on the 80" models as he is a pretty tall fellow...
