    Dead or Alive....

    Hello again.

I was wondering if there might be scope to branch out to a couple of new sub-categories of chat.

I had in mind a "going, going, gone" tribute to Series trucks that have served humankind well but have gone on to LR heaven; and maybe a "seen in the quadrants" category for trucks sighted by SLOW members in the various corners of the globe (Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas) - I know there is a thread for taking them off the net, but I had in mind own photos.

    Some examples:

    Going, going gone:

    Tenthill Creek

    Maun Botswana

    Barru South Sulawesi

    And for the Quadrants:

    Harare Zimbabwe

    SLC Utah

    Tucson AZ

    Anyway, just a suggestion.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    New Sub-Categories

I think you have scoped it out, Neil......just use this thread.....or begin one in here called going going, gone....suggestions to make multiple sub forums of say, "General Chat" have been put before.....what typically happens is that the sub forums are populated by very few threads.....generally the single one that was the reason to make the sub forum.

The ideas for threads you suggest are great! But why not just run them here in General Chat?

    A few snaps from Zimbabwe

    Hello again.

Following the theme of "going, going, gone" or thereabouts - here are a couple of more Series living on the brink from Zimbabwe - location is the once pleasant rural service town of Marondera which lies east of Harare about 70kms.

Never know, the tow truck is probably still being used and never say "never" on the wagon - stranger things find their way onto the road around the bundu.

This last photo has nothing to do with Land Rovers, but I thought it might be of interest:

The elephant is a female of about 33 years age and was orphaned during a culling shoot in Gonarezhou National Park - after the shooting party left she was found as a suckling calf wandering around the site. So, she ended up on this refuge and hand-reared along with some buffalo.

Now,the interesting bit - elephant herds are matriarchial and buffalo are essentially patriarchal. She thinks she is a buffalo and as the largest animal leads the herd. The young bulls in time think they should have a crack at leadership and mount a challenge for which they invariably come off second best - she has already killed 4 bulls outright and injured another 7. So, part of the management skill is getting rid of the young bulls early enough to avoid the loss - easier said than done because few private game reserves are big enough to hold buffalo herds and the bulls are worth a lot of money. Returning to the buff-ele - this paddock is across the road from the main reserve which has always contained several bull elephants and when in must the "scents" of both sexes travel a much greater distance than the physical distance between the reserves. While the boys have been spreading themselves far and wide, she has never come on heat despite having all the appearances of being sexually capable of reproducing. One of the keepers suggested that maybe she thinks she is not just a buffalo, but also a nun.

    Strange thing nature.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    Zim Rovers

    Hello again from Brisbane.

Back from the Dark Continent and in keeping with the theme of this thread - here are a few local survivors and fallen by the ways.....

The first - taken near Kedzi in Matabeleland South - one of the few Series 1 trucks that I have come across that still appears to be going:

The lady of the house was outside waiting for a bus and the yard was locked, so I wasn't really in a position to ask to have a good crawl over it. I inquired of its ownership to which the response was "it is my man's and he has had it for many years. I think they are a very strong car. No?" To which the normal "hugs, yeah baby, high fives, right on Sister!" might have usually applied. However, as I was chatting to a married Ndbele lady without formal introduction and a presumably a large husband asleep nearby, it seemed more appropriate to simply say "so, I am taken to believe".......

The next was taken on a trip to Hwange NP with an interesting companion (we arrived 6 hours later with about 16 X 440ml Castles on board.....):

These carcases are scattered all over Africa - not sure where the 80% of all Land Rovers ever built are still on the road claim comes from - except that most are Discovery's, Range Rovers and Freelanders driven less than 1km from a school zone.......

The apparent owner gave me the offer off a lifetime - USD2000. I said I would think about it.......

Finally, (yes, I know it it has coils) - the new "old camp Defender":

So, there you go - still a few out there occupying their traditional habitat.

Ndlovu happens to mean "elephant" in Zulu and Ndbele in case you were wondering.

    Cheers,

    Neil

Maybe you should be armed with membership forms for your next trip.... We could use some Ndbela members, especially Series 1 owning folk.....

At Sossusvlei - a couple of Puma's set up for the tourists.

At Canon Roadhouse - Namibia. A model and a true veteran.

    Dan,

    Thanks.

It's really not my thread per se - just something I initiated. Belongs to the SLOW community.

The original intent was pretty much along the lines of opening a thread to feature members own photos of two categories of Series trucks that they might come across on their various ventures (1) dead or dying, or (2) still serving their time in some local or foreign field.

I originally called these "going, going, gone" and the "four quadrants". Readers of the various UK magazines will be familiar with the types of photos that get submitted to columns along those lines. Over the years I submitted both types.

When I offered up the suggestion for these themes I acknowledged that there was a thread for submitting pictures off the web - I added a few there myself. However, the intent here was to offer a place for members to put up stuff of their own along with a short or longer tale of what it was, where and anything else that may be of interest.

Since this thread appears to be off and going in that direction - hope so - I would be happy for the title to be changed to something more appropriate. Also happy to let others make the call on what to call it.

For now, here's another one from Ubud in Bali, Indonesia:

I owe this little truck a bit of a favour - or lifetime condemnation. It was parked outside the hotel that the S3's and I were camped in a few years back and a casual mention to MrsS3ute of a lifetime's longing to yet again own one after many years of separation from the farm subsequently bore fruit.

The little offering to the gods (of Lode Lane) was my own thought and clearly the prayer was answered.

Nothing like the steamy tropics to rekindle a bit of passion............

    Cheers,

    Neil
