    Allora Heritage Weekend 2018

    Hello again from Sherwood.

Although it never became an official club trip, the annual antique tractor, truck, car and machinery Australia Day weekend bash at Allora did at least get into the planning chatter thread. Forgoing the option to go fishing at Deepwater, I did eventually mooch up the range to see what was old or new this year. As it turned out, it was pretty much the same overall as the previous few years.

However, the emphasis on the Saturday when I was there was pretty much on the old cars rather than the vintage tractors and trucks which had previously dominated the centre ring activities. Taken from a personal perspective of having more interest in the tractors and machinery - the family sold farm machinery for years - I was a bit disappointed that about half of the central ring area had been covered in blue metal and the tractor pull pad had been located to the far side of the ground. Not that there was any pulling going on for the few hours that I was wandering around, but it meant that you would have been standing in the full sun if it had. Ditto the tractor races, blindfold driving etc that usually added a bit of interest to the ring events - moreover the main Saturday ring parade only featured the old cars without the tractors or trucks.

More than likely the shifting emphasis could have been due to the event being hosted by the Warwick vintage car club rather than the vintage machinery crew - and they may have decided that a change in emphasis was overdue. Whatever, I still enjoyed being out and about and found enough things of interest to keep wandering around.

Here is a bit of the flavour of it - noting that having not changed much over the last few years the collections on display hadn't changed much either. So, a lot of the photos will have a bit of a deja vu feel to them.

Plus this classic - back in my 20's I had hatched a plan to drive one of the earlier models of this bread van around Europe for a year or so. Common sense intervened and I went to uni in Canada for the skiing instead...........

Overall, a good day out in the country - and the P&C Association's hamburgers were still pretty good.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the pics Neil, Haddo was keen to go, but he had to work instead. As far as I know, it has always been run by the Warwick Vintage Car Club, It was last year at least.

    Cheers,
    Mick.

    Mick,

    Hello again and thanks.

Yes, you are right there about the Warwick car club running the event each year. I half knew that I suppose.

Actually, they do run a pretty good show each time - I suppose my half-empty appraisal was more prompted by not sensing that the old tractors were as prominently featured in the main arena as much as might have been the case when I went in previous years. Could have been so a little later in the day perhaps.

There were quite a few tractors and trucks in the display areas - many of the same coming each year, so you get to know them.

The big centre-articulated Wagner from Oregon was a newcomer - apparently imported in the 70s for broadacre cropping on the Downs, but looks for all the world like a modified log-skidder which it likely was. Quite a few of the old Farmalls, Lanz Bulldogs and John Deere’s from previous years weren’t there which was a bit disappointing - although it only takes a couple of owners with large collections to turn up or not to change the composition a fair bit.

Anyway, well worth going to - I probably will again same time next year. There is a big machinery bash in Kingaroy later in the year and another further up the coast. Likewise the New England vintage truck and tractor show may be coming up in Armidale later in the year - from all accounts pretty good.

It would be good to get a few Land Rovers back there again, as was the case back around 2015 when Dan got a fair sized crew up for the occasion.

    Cheers,

    Neil
