I'm tipping it's a piece of chewed up spider gear.
If it was 16ft tall and hollow you'd be able to sell it to the museum of modern art.
i'm in the money!
my rear diff has worked out how to make metal bits!
dam dam dam....
now to work out what it is from
are the centre assemblies the same for front and rear?
will a series i center rear center bolt straight up..

Slip up to your local Land Rover wrecker.
Have a look for a suitable donor, which is one with free wheeling hubs and ask to have that diff centre out of the front.
You will find that having the free wheeling hubs disengaged most of it's life, the front diff will be hardly worn when compared with the rear diff centre.
To give the diff a final check, twist the pinion to and fro, this is to find out how much preload and backlash there is. A nicely setup diff should have about 10thou backlash, with the crown wheel bearing preload should be lightly firm when rocked back and forth and the same being lightly firm in the pinions rotation also.
The other thing to look for is any wear of thrust washers in between the side gears and the carrier, I like to see mine just firm to move when a new set has been fitted.
Price? maybe offer up to $150 for a tidy centre. don't pay anything for a sloppy one as it will need bearings and time spent on it.
.
sell the metal art on ebay to fund the repair
Same carrier frontand rear, I think i habe a spare one readyy to go.

Possibly a crown wheel carrier bolt. I have had one come out like that before and snapped when it caught on the diff housing.

now Im on the lappy and IVe got the pics to load up properly..
I concur its a crown wheel bolt. the existing diff may be salvageable with little more effort than finding the shreaded bolt massaging it out and installing a new bolt with some good loctite. (although I am STILL a fan of loctabs/lockwire on those buggers.

Seriously Dave, Ebay USA will lap it up
Just claim it is representative of a bowel movement of an obscure Mayan religious deity and the bids will go stratospheric....
