    855's getting an engine rebuild

Well after a 2800km Road trip last May 2011. I decided that the engine in R860855 was well over due for an engine rebuild. It would have kept going but the oil use was off the chart and really needed to be looked at.

It was last rebuilt in 1958 so it was sitting on 020 pistons, 010mains and 020 conrods. This was not the orgional engine. I'm still trying to trace the history on the vehicle and the hope in the future that the side plate might turn up. Unlikey.. For now a the simese bore 2.0L its had it in it for quite some time I think will have to do. It's apart of the vehicles history.

    So out with the engine.

Started at 10-11am doors off. By 10.30pm engine out. Included the removal of seatbox section and gearbox. Not bad but still a day job.

Once the engine was out now it was time to strip. No photos here as i totally forgot to take any! I found after a measure up that it needed to go to 040 thou over. I asked about going to 030 as i can get 030 pistons for a better price but it would not have cleaned up enough so 040 it had to be.

Also needed to goto 020 Mains and 030 Big Ends. I could not find any 030 big ends so 040s it had to be. Also Gaskets and Seals also in the same box.

Will be dropping off the pistons, bearings and bushs tomorrow morning and should have the engine by next weekend... I should be able to get it mostly together in a weekend.

I might have to make up a SLOW Event Trip so i can run the engine in!

Just looking at your firewall Alex, firstly I thought your coil is fitted a bit lower than mine is, and I mention this because I am having a lot of trouble refitting the top "special" screw into the firewall as the coil mount has to tuck up under the drip rail and that doesn't leave much room for fingers.
But then I noticed that you don't have the drip rail on the 49. Have you any clues as to when this appeared?
    Regards
    Glen

    Hi Glen,

Yes that top screw is a right pain to get in on a 49 onwards vehicle. The drip rail appeared very early 1949 you could almost say late 1948 year models at them.

Well motor is back and the assembly is to begin.

040 thou over on the bores. My engine man left the 1948 pennys in. There is actually 2 of them in the the place of the side exhaust face area core plugs.

This little 2.0L is going to golike $ hit off a shiny shovel.

Not alot done today. Got side tracked onto other things but Pistons in and ready for crankshaft.

That they do. Compression rings only. The oil control rings did not have any markings. But Number Three ring was a tiny bit bigger on the top so i put it to the top as per the manual.

Interestingly the info that comes with the Hepolite pistons talks about this extra super drain oil ring in the skirt. I cannot see what they are talking about?

Camshaft Fitted. I found one of the cam bearings had some bad scoreing lack of oil perhaps. The camshaft looked fine. I have replaced this bearing. The other bearings were in spec and are fine.

Checking the Oil scroll. Measured 0.06 thou. Right within the 0.05-0.10 as per the manual.

Interesting to compare the crown heights.

One on left is a 020 Rolly Australia Piston on Right is the replacement 040 Hepolite. (Rings not set on piston yet)

I use Queensland Cylinder Heads - About Us which is around 5-10 min drive from home.

    I only had the

    # Reboring
    # Head and Block facing
    # crank grinding

They have done 2 motors for me so know how to work with a sloping head design.

Took around 4 months as they are very busy but i am not in a rush so it does not worry me.
