AFAIK the 88's didn't goto 11 inch brakes but they did have dual line brakes.
if you're upgrading the brakes who cares what they did to start with go for whats safest and thats dual line brakes.

A quick question if you will.
At the time that the Series 3 88" models went to 11" front drums and servo assisted brakes was the set up from the master cylinder single or dual line?
I am fitting the 11" drums and servo assisted master cylinder from a six cylinder truck to my 88" and was considering getting one of the Automec prefab brake line sets. Need to know if the upgraded system is equivalent to something that once left the factory.

I have a 1974 series 3 88 and is fitted with 10 inch single circuit brakes.
Maybe after that they may have went to dual circuit.

Dual circuit brakes were optional at the factory level , I believe, for all Series 3, but were specified for markets according to local regulations. But according to the parts book, they changed to dual systems and also for the 88 to 11" brakes in July 1980. Australia may have had dual brakes earlier.

Make sure you use all of the LWB brake components, including master cylinder, front and rear backing plates and wheel cylinders. If you don't then the hydraulic ratios will be wrong and you will have a pedal that is a solid as a rock, and virtually no brakes.

Yes, I have all those parts in hand.
Been a couple of years since I picked up the servo and master cylinder and couldn't remember if it was single or dual circuit - had an idea that it was single circuit.
Will obviously sort all that out closer to when the installation proceeds.
The reason for the present thread was that I was talking to someone about the Automec lines and they asked if the set up was standard or some jury rigged job. I had suggested it would be pretty close to standard but just wanted to check what the servo fitted 88" trucks came fitted with from Land Rover.

Not entirely clear!
The 109 ceased production with the introduction of the 110 in 1983, but the 88 continued in production until at least 1984 when the 90 was introduced, and a few were delivered, I believe, as late as 1988 to special order.
In Australia, production of the 109 was replaced by the 110 and 120 in 1984, I think, with 88 production ceasing at that time (all production ceased in 1990, fully imported after about 1992, with a hiatus with no Defenders sold). The 90 was not introduced to Australia until much later, I think about 2000 (briefly) and then reintroduced about 2010.
Hope this helps - maybe others can give more accurate dates, as I am going on memory.

Hello from Brisbane.
Still on the topic of Series 3 brakes. I have the brakes apart on my 1975 88" that has been previously fitted with the 11" front and rear units from a 6 cylinder 109".
A few years back when I first bought the truck in a fit of new owner enthusiasm I ordered a bunch of seemingly cheap parts from the UK including new wheel cylinders and linings. Finally being near the point after all this time of getting around to possibly using this kit I have some hesitation - having a few years under the belt of hearing about the poor performance of cheap pattern parts which might be the case here. I bought this stuff through DLS in Derbyshire - not sure if anyone else has experience with their brake bits.
A couple of alternatives are to source genuine Lucas-TRW NOS parts or get the units that are already on the truck reconditioned. The first option appears to be pretty expensive whether this be done via the UK or local suppliers. So, my question here is whether there is someone in Brisbane who I should take the present cylinders and linings to to see if they can be refurbished at reasonable cost?
