    Series 3 Mark I info

    Hello to all i have just purchased a Series 3 Mark I land rover with the 3.5 V8 petrol engine. My first question is are they normally positive earth wired or did the last person get it wrong, second question is where can i get a workshop manual for this vehicle; so i can start to redo all the wiring it has a lot of extras on it at present i would like to get it back to original. Also i need a few items to get it going it needs a second fuel tank at present it has one under the drivers seat and one missing from the passengers seat. These were installed when a gas tank was fitted to the rear of the car, something i am thinking of removing until i get it on the road all advice and assistance will be gratefully received.

    What you have is presumably a Series 3 Stage 1. One source of manuals is to purchase on DVD from the AULRO shop, which helps maintain this site. See the bar at the top of this page.

    As far as i know, all Series 3 (including Stage 1s) were negative earth, and I can think of no reason why this would have been changed. The change from positive earth was made in 1967.

    Sounds like the previous person got it wrong, which is likely to have had a disastrous effect on the alternator, although I don't think anything else will have been affected (unless it has a non-original electronic ignition module).

    Thank you for the quick reply i was worried it was set up wrong electrically i have not started to work on the car just sat back and looked it over, i will supply photo and discuss work covered as i go along i have a lot to do in a short time so will be upto elbows in it later in the week.

    I thought Stage 1s had their fuel tank under the rear tray with the fuel filler at the rear and not under the seats. If it has tanks under the seats maybe put in later or the vehicle is not a Stage 1 - but as usual I could be wrong.

    Hello Gary,

    No you are right regarding the fuel tanks but it has had gas fitted so they put two earlier styled tanks under the seats and installed the gas tank where the original was still thinking what to do.

    Okay today i spent some time removing bits and pieces around the engine bay to get a better look at what i had i did climb underneath and observed that the rear diff looks to be the same as Series 3 did they come with a Salisbury rear diff it is much larger than the front one. I installed a battery the right way around and tried to turn it over, no major issues but when i connected fuel it leaked everywhere so i will start on the fuel system tomorrow given a spare minute

    The Stage 1 is in fact a Series 3, and is officially simply called a Series 3 109 V8 (or Isuzu in Australia). "Stage 1" was an internal factory name for the first stage in updating the Series vehicles.

    To accommodate the V8, there are a number of differences, apart from the V8 engine. The major differences are:-

    Radiator and grillemoved forward to flush with front of guards, necessitating longer bonnet (same as 90/110/Defender.

    Constant four wheel drive instead of selectable four wheel drive, using the Range Rover/101FC LT95 combined gearbox and transfer case .

    Diff ratios changed from 4.7 to 3.54

    The changes to the front end required a somewhat different steering gear arrangement, and the constant four wheel drive meant the U-joints in the swivels had to be replaced by CV joints.

    Apart from these changes, and minor differences in trim and options, the Stage 1 is pretty much a standard Series 3. Brakes are the same as the six. Note that they only came as the 109 long wheelbase, and were sold with a variety of body styles. probably the most common in Australia was the trayback ute.

    Only sold for a few years, they are fairly rare today, and it can be a problem finding some of the parts that were special to the Stage 1, such as swivel pins and bushes.
