    Hello again from Sherwood.

This may seem a silly question, but whereabouts are the two retaining bands normally located on the rear axle case?

Especially on the short axle (right) side. There isn’t much room between the tee piece mounted on the diff casing and the spring u bolts which has the plate with the pipe clips on it. Are they sited between the spring and drum brake backplate? As noted earlier, the bands aren’t actually shown on the axle casing in the relevant parts diagram.

To be honest I don’t remember taking any bands off the axle casing when I pulled the old lines off yonks ago. The PO may well have not fitted them.

    Cheers,

    Neil

From my recollection, the short side was a tad towards the Tee from centre of the pipe. No idea if that was original but it was about there when I took possession & so is back there now. On the long side ( LH) there were/are two equally spaced.

Again, don't know if that was original but a olde Neil type may have buggered around with them beforehand.

So long as the the pipes are supported against vibration is what matters, as far as I can see.

Heres a picture on my Series3 Lightweight rear axle, Completely original of course, you can see theres only one tie down band on the left side . both sides are attached by P-clamps to a bracket that sits on the spring perches .

That is an interesting set up GB & pretty good articulation. One wonders whether it being a S3 & a Lightweight would have been different for MoD specs?

I have seen 2As with the pipes floating in the breeze but they wouldn't have left the factory like that.

Yes I figured mounting the shocks inboard would give significantly more articulation than the same length shocks mounted outboard. This setup as used on FJ40 LandCruisers and works very well . Since I don't have a muffler I thought I mighaswell use the space previously occupied by it for something useful.
