Torque settings for front stub axle assembly

    Hello from Sherwood.

Not succeeding in finding the correct torque settings for the six bolts that fit the brake backing plate and stub axle assembly to the outer swivel housing assembly of my 1975 S3.

I've been looking in both the LR Workshop manual and a Haynes manual without success - both say to tighten the bolts to the correct torque setting but don't seem to specify the actual torque.

    Anyone happen to know?

    Cheers,

    Neil

About that and a bit more - never torqued these up before, just do them up tight enough.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

remember bolt size is the shank or major diamter of the thread not the spanner size

    We have a problem....

    Hello again from Sherwood.

I should correct that title to “I have a(nother) problem”. Took up the task of getting on with the front drive train reassembly yesterday afternoon and came across a bit of a barrier.

Despite being armed with a fairly expensive torque wrench, all was going well until it came to the sixth bolt on the left hand stub axle/brake backing plate assembly. Seemed to be requiring an awful lot of turning for a 45 ft/lb limit when it went slack.

So, either the bolt has stripped its thread or the threaded hole in the outer swivel assembly has - vain hope is that it is only the former, but reflective thought is erring to the latter. One of the sub-rules of Murphy’s Law being that if more than one thing might go wrong it will be the more troublesome one that steps in first.

I haven’t been able to remove the bolt as of yet to check - probably needs another set of hands to apply a fair bit of pressure on the backing plate while the bolt is turned. Once it is out then the damage and future options should be more apparent.

Still at a bit of a loss as to why the wrench didn’t click off at the designated setting, but it didn’t. Also have to accept that I was getting concerned about the force that was getting applied and should have stopped sooner.

Another lesson in there somewhere. I may be on the look out for a surplus to someone else’s needs left hand side outer swivel assembly housing sooner than later.

    Cheers,

    Neil

    Hello again from Sherwood.

A bit of an update from earlier - despite using a torque wrench I managed to come to grief with one of the six bolts on the left hand swivel assembly outer housing. It took a bit of getting it back apart but finally came good just before lunch.

The bolt thread was badly munted, but the thread in the casting appears to still be okay. So, I ferreted through a bucket of old bits and bolts that came with the truck and found one that appears to be the correct size and thread. Cleaned it up with a wire brush and will have a go at putting it all back together later this afternoon.

Still not sure about the correct torque setting for those bolts - found one post on a UK forum that suggests that it is between 30-38 ft/lb. I was using 45 ft/lb which may explain why it went balls up. Whatever, it was way too high.

Always a learning experience with these tasks.

    Cheers,

    Neil

which grade bolt are you using, if you're down in the chineesium end of the spectrum you can stretch fail them with a good sized ringy

    Hello from Sherwood.

Using the same set of bolts that came out of the assembly. Presumably the original bolts that it was first assembled with.

they'd be grade 5, I replace them with grade 7 for imperial 8 for metric (series VS later stuff the old imperial grades dont quite line up with the metric standards)

if the bolt has no marking on it then its probably a grade 3 cheesium, manufactured from recycled series halfshafts and blended with only the finest gouda during the coking process.
