Biggest issues is a warped, cracked or damaged head. Beyond that it is quite easy if you follow the instructions.
ok have read and read and read on how to replace and diagnose problems with head and head gasket. what is happening is it is leaking coolant down from the back of the head gasket into the clutch housing have replaced clutch ($2150) quoted arond 3 grand for the head. what i want to know before i attack this, ( like your tutorial helped a lot), it appears to just be a straight head gasket replacement (154000 k's) just curious if anyone can give me torque settings for head bolts, any problems that were found when reassembling, being an aluminium engine WELL aware of the potential to strip out bolts. the more knowledge the better, forewarned is forearmed and we could all use fourarms.

Are you sure it is the head gasket? The plug between # 3 and 4 (behind the exhaust manifold) can leak and display just like this. If the leaking coolant is your only symptom, it will be well worth chiecking this plug, before going to the expense of a head gasket change.

Yep it is deffinatly the gasket coz the mechanic forced it by presure testing the coolent system.

Don't forget to make shure the injectors go ack in the right spot if you pull it all down.
The Head is heavier than you expect. I also gave my head gasket 2 thin coats of copper gasket spray.
Shouldnt use any sealant of any kind on a head gasket unless it specifically states to do so particularly in a diesel and definitely not with a steel laminate gasket and unless its an old style copper sandwich gasket ala Mini's etc, every manufacturer will state "DO NOT USE SEALANT ON HEAD GASKET" somewhere in their literature.
Composite type head gaskets will have a coating on them designed to bond after first run and engine heats up and with steel laminate ones, the sealant interferes with the specific crush designed into the gasket.
In a diesel its a huge no no as the sealant is the first thing to give and will burn out once compression gasses start to pass thru it.
Not enough fingers and toes to count how many failed heads I have seen where sealant was smeared over the top and a fair amount I voided as a warranty claims.

Happy its working for you but you still don't do it. Spent enough time in engineering workshops, wholesale for OEM and now with a Genuine manufacturer mate.....
Plus you dont want someone to take the advice and end up with damage now do you....![]()
To anyone interested i have finally got around to repacing the head gasket. Kicked it over this morning and it is running sweet
