Thread: Replacing viscous fan with Thermo??

Just another thought Twitchy,

If $$$ are a consideration, I'm sure I seen posts where people have used a viscous hub from some sort of Falcon from the wreckers, with only very minor mods. Might be worth a search on here if no one pipes up.

Sounds like you have both fans running off the one temp switch.

I have one on all the time (yes I know I was going to address this) and the other on an adjustable temp switch which was adjusted once, 3 years ago.

Only have a 55 amp alt and have no probs with spots, lights, stereo, wipers and heater going, along with one thermo. Never had the second one kick in if the heater fan and wipers were needed.

Bearing in mind that the fan on vee belt V8's run CW, the serpentines run CCW. So the Falcon thing might work on the vee belt model.

IIRC V8 Falcons have a serpbelt with fan that goes the same way as the LR one.

I've never fitted a falcon fan to a V8 but I have one on my Tdi and it fits as neat as the OME one. Pat

Davies Craig don't make anything worthwhile and an electric water pump is just as useful.

When needed the viscous shifts heaps of air, when not it freewheels. Replace a viscous with a new viscous if the old one's worn, its there to provide massive airflow when you are doing it tough. Electrics will save very little fuel over a working viscous and are rarely enough for a 4WD.

The CORRECT thermofan shifts heaps of air too and turns off when its not needed. In a hot climate, it makes a considerable difference in fuel over a viscous and running aircon, try and find a moment when its not locked up!!

Those who have done it and "have problems" dont really look hard enough at whats required when doing a conversion.

Biggest problem is people tend to use accessory fans ie Davies Craig etc etc and cheap junk from retail "polish and blingggg" auto stores manned by part time jockeys and idiots who know very little technically unless they read it from a catalogue.

All those who say "ooohh dont do it, they dont work.." should post up exactly what they did and what they used. Bet it will become obvious straight away where the mistakes are.

As for "traffic, red lights blah blah blah, the RIGHT fan will balance your cooling FAAAAAAAAARRRRRR better than any viscous will. A viscous idling in traffic pulls bugger all air until you pickup revs then once revving, can pull that much that it actually becomes pointless as the heat transfer ratio starts to drop.

A thermo will pull max air when idling and wont shut off until its cool enough to do so.

And dont put them on the front of the radiator or tie them up against the core on the back of the radiator and just like any viscous, make sure you have a decent cowling.

Like I said, the ones that fail are the ones that are done half assed.
