Help needed - installing HD rear axles

    Hi All

I scored a set of Heavy Duty rear axles and drive flanges. They are Bearmach branded items from England to suit my 98 Defender.

I am just after the steps to remove the standard axles and install the new ones.

Is it just a matter of removing the old drive flange, withdrawing the axle and then the reverse for installing the new axle and drive flange?

    Cheers

    You said it

Just clean the faces and apply some sealant before bolting in the new ones

So there's no circlips or hub nuts or lock washers to undo?

    Cheers

If you don't have oil lubed wheel bearings now is the time to make the change. Otherwise your new heavy duty items will wear out in the same manner as the factory originals...

How do I change over to oil filled bearings? Do I need to remove the bearings and clean out the grease first?

    Cheers

There are a few how to's on site if you do a search.

Basically pull the hubs off and replace the grease type hub seal with an oil type hub seal.

Then remove the seal that stops oil from getting into the bearings and top up the diff to over full so the oil can migrate into the hubs.

The seal surface on the hub axle needs to be in good condition to prevent future oil leaks.

It is probably a good time to check and if required replace the wheel bearings. They will still need grease to lubricate them until the oil gets there.
