    V8 MAF TEST & GROUP BUY

    Before reading on this Mass Air Flow meter or MAF Test and Group Buy thread is ONLY for 3.5/3.9/4.2 Litre V8’s using a 3AM or 5AM Lucas/Hitachi Hot Wire style MAF’s. The vehicles are D1’s and RRC’s. If your MAF ID label has long disintegrated see the attached photos.

    Note: It is NOT for early Flapper style found on 3.5’s or the later RR GEMS style Hotwire MAF’s or Bosch film style MAF’s in 4.0 and 4.6’s.

    TESTING

    To test your MAF to see if it may be defective follow my instructions at this thread for testing the MAF’s “airflow signal”. Air Flow Meter Supplier

    For testing other sensors comprising the fuel injection system but unrelated to the MAF’s “airflow” function such as fuel and engine temp, speed, TPS and CO trim etc you can find many threads on those subjects. However you will find sitting inside the MAF (but not connected to its airflow electronics) a “CO trim pot”. I recommend you go to LovemyRangie's Tutorial mentioned at that test thread to see if that potentiometer or pot is functioning. If not functioning then you have two options, one which is to replace the MAF.

    GROUP BUY

    This Group Buy part of this thread has come about from my frustration at the limited options for obtaining a reliable MAF at a reasonable cost. Those purchase options are as follows:

    1. OEM priced at $1,200 - $1,800 (I am advised Lucas/Hitachi no longer make OEM units and they are made in China);
    2. Remanufactured/Exchange Units $500 - $700 (The most popular choice with respected LR mechanics in Aust on account of the OEM price and most insist the remanufacturer provide some guarantee, albeit limited. However some experts claim MAF’s can’t be properly remanufactured);
    3. Aftermarket built in China and labeled for firms like Britpart etc around $300 (however with no guarantee);
    4. Second hand $100 - $400 (some are obviously already defective)
    5. Online sellers inc Evilbay $100.00 – $150.00. (some people claim to have had no problems with these after a couple of years use and some are defective at time of sale)

    Therefore with the above in mind I went in search of a factory that while they might be in China, they are producing a quality unit (and maybe even score the factory that produces the OEM units). I have some experience in dealing with Chinese supply chain.

    I used a variety of methods to weed out the low quality manufactures which I won’t go into here. However evidence that they displayed their auto parts at trade shows outside Asia and acknowledged international manufacturing standards I took to be one promising sign.

    This left me with one manufacturer noting like most they would not sell less than 50 – 100 units. However I have secured an offer for 10 units from this preferred manufacturer.

    The price of less than $100 each (including tracked international delivery) while probably irrelevant, may indicate this manufacturer is supplying either the aftermarket (#3 above) or maybe even OEM (#1 above), however that is not possible to confirm. Obviously they don’t come with any guarantee. Before someone asks it would not be appropriate to reveal on line the identity of the manufacturer.

    I propose that you will pay me, then I will pay the manufacturer, take delivery, repack and distribute via overnite Express (or registered mail that service unavailable). The cost of each unit is $98.00 including delivery to you Australia wide. I have included in price a 15% contingency if something goes pear shaped like customs impose GST etc. To keep it simple I will cover off if that contingency allowance proves insufficient. If it helps I have collected and distributed group buys to members before.

    If you want to participate in this Group Buy the process is:

    1. PM me with your delivery details and method of pre-payment for the $98.00. It can be direct electronic bank deposit or by PayPal.

    2. I will then email you payment details being my bank account or my PayPal email address depending on your payment method.

    3. When all (or the majority of) payments have cleared I will place the order and pay the manufacturer and confirm delivery timeframe.

    As there are only 9 units available this will have to be on a first in best dressed basis. I would like to place the order no later than next Tuesday.

    As this is a not for profit exercise I only ask that you share your working experiences with these units on this forum for the benefit of all members.

    I stress that if you are concerned at all, you should not participate in this Group Buy. For me I am treating it as the cost of tank of gas to see if I can get away with not having to pay up to $700 for a remanufactured/exchange unit.

    Cheers

    I have been told I was a bit too technical saying this MAF fits a "....V8’s using a 3AM or 5AM Lucas/Hitachi Hot Wire style MAF’s..." etc.

    Therefore to make it simple this MAF fits 1987-1995 Range Rover Classic V8's and 1989 - 1998 Disco 1 V8's (or for that matter any Rover V8 that is using the same ECU as those vehicles).

    What date are you looking at for a cut off for this group buy? I'm keen to perform the test on my MAF but will not get a chance till the weekend. If its stuffed I'll probably take a gamble on the buy.
