Don't forget to get a coolant level alarm too and if possible one with a temp guage as well, DO NOT TRUST the factory temp guage.

Enginesaver and Madmans are good quality ones AND these guys own LandRovers.

Id start by checking the grounding on the guage itself.

Sometimes the instruments have common ground and a connector or a nut has come loose giving abrupt changes in temp readings.

If so I would run a seperate ground cable from the guage straight to ground.

Check the wire from guage to sender unit (thermo couple) is good and check for signs of wear. These parts are easily and cheaply replaced and a good place to start before looking at removing thermostats and radiators etc.

My TD5 had problems with the gauge reading correct one moment and then droping to Zero or half way between normal and zero. Gave the sensor a tap with a spanner all was again normal. When it happened again, did the same thing, out with the spanner. :ohyes: Replaced the sensor, now no more problems. hehe

I had a similar issue. The EMS was pretty constant and would move up or down depending on load and speed.
At the same time the termostat was low, the normal then low again. Turned out that a simple cleaning of the wires fixed it all.
