Thread: Stone Guards & Mudflaps Disco. 2

I was talking to Redback when he came down to Blackwood with his camper about this. I think he said they have a perspex rear window protector to protect the window as even with the stone guard rocks still bounce up. He will have to provide more info on this as the conversation was after a few beers and can't recall all the details.

In the referred to window breakage, used thick corrugated cardboard to repair and as window protector (for later gravel raods we travelled on).
I am now looking for advice on full width vs. part width/separated mud flaps on Disco. as an additional protection.

I also broke a rear window while towing a camper trailer a few years ago.
My 'fix' was to increase the angle of the stone deflector and reduce my speed on gravel roads.

The problem with perspex or cardboard on the rear window is that stones will still be thrown at the rear of your vehicle and although you may save your rear window, you will suffer numerous stone chips to the rear panels of the vehicle. You need to stop the stones from being thrown back.
My experience with large mudflaps on the vehicle is that they drag when travelling outback tracks and are ineffective in stopping the stones from flicking up.

Another option that I have seen but have no experience with is to set up two triangular deflectors along each side of the 'A' frame from the ball joint to each side of the trailer box. The centre of the 'A' frame also needs to be completely covered - usually with checker plate and storage box etc. This could be worth investigating.

I have also reset the angle of my stone guard, from that originally set by Goldstream, who had it set at about 90 degress.
I will now also look at options between the tow point and teh trailer

Hi Witsenz, I have a TD5 and Goldstream also-what did you come up with? Any photos? I cant see anywhere under the disco to mount heavy full width rubber?

i saw a picture somewhere of a horizontal barrier that attached to the rear bumper with occy straps and onto the a frame drawer bar . i think it was made of shade cloth , but used in conjunction with the standard deflector. i have always been curious if this was a one off or something new.
