Put it on the roof !
... a 255/265 on the bonnett will definitley obstruct your view
Kev..
Well first of I have a series three land rover ute sitting on a range rover chassis. So where do I put the spare wheel? It`s mounted behind the cab at the moment, witch is a PTA when the ute is loaded. The fuel tank being a range rover tank and chassis is right behind the rear bumper/cross member. So no real options underneath. There is a tow hitch that has been directly welded to the rear bumper/cross member. The ute has a fold down tail gate.Thought of a swing away style carrier but it would obstruct the tow hitch.Mount it above the tow hitch and it`s way high to remove a tyre if needed.Ute is a tad higher of the ground than std .Have thought of the bonnet but it`s a plastic defender one .Will a plastic defender bonnet take the load of a spare wheel and would 255/85/16 or 265/75/16 type tyres obstruct your vision to much?Got me having a scratch and a think. So any thoughts?Ideas?Perfect solution for a $1.50?

I have a Defender 90. I stuck my spare on the bonnet but used a 7.50 16 on a swb rim so I can see over it. Defender bonnets up to 96 should have the mountings.
I used to own an old dodge pick up and had the same problem. I solved it by making a steel plate with a right angle bend at the bottom that bolted to the floor. The wheel I mounted on the vertical face. I positioned it so the mounted wheel was in line with the side of the tub making it easy to get in and out even with a fully loaded tub. Hope this makes sense and helps.
I got a bonnet wheel mounting system from Opposite lock. I put some 4 mm strips on the underside to add some reinforcing. According to opposite lock its not needed and they say their testing has not found any fatigue issues with the mounting system.
Good idea alittlebitconerned ( thats a long user name) but the land rover ute body`s are stepped on the inside. So a space saver on the bonnet might be the go then.

I do not know if you would be able to do this over here, but on the other side of the pond we used to mount the spares to the side of the tub. (UK Military style)
