On start up, the pump should run to build up system pressure. Ideally, it should run for less than 45 seconds.

After that, it should run on application of the brakes (maybe after several apps of the brakes) as system pressure falls. A failing accumulator is indicated by taking longer than 45 secs for the pump to stop working and the pump running every time the pedal is pressed.

Like Ron says, that sounds like a classic accumulator failure to me. Pump is about $2k:eek::eek:, Accumulator about $500:eek:.

I have since been back to the dealer who has re -bled the system and said there is was no air locks.

So .....!!.........I understand the point that the pump should run on start up for about 45sec and consequently every so often with usage........my problem is understanding why this noise on start up has never occured during the 3 years I have owned the car and why it should suddenly occur after its been into the garage and had the system flushed thru and the pads replaced. Thats what's confusing me !!

I wonder if something was not right previous to the work being done and that now the system is running as it should ?

Could I have been driving around with the pump not working at all for 3 years ?.....

Anyway it seems to be settling with the pumping doing what everybody is telling me it should ....
