TD5 Head Gasket retension
Hi all,
I have recently replaced the head gasket on my Disco 2 TD5 2000 model (did the job myself thanks to the excellent tutorial on here). My query now is, do the new head gaskets need to be retensioned after so many kilometres or not? For information purposes my vehicle uses a 2 hole head gasket.
If the head does require retensioning what are the specifications for this?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

You don't need to retension the bolts no.

Thanks Pete,
I was just getting worried that the symptoms that made me change the head gasket was rearing its ugly head. That is the coolant header tank might be being over pressurised again as coolant was coming from the overflow pipe.
I suppose I should just wait and watch as it has only been about 1000kms since the gasket was changed.
By the way is there a bedding in period also for the head gasket were you should go over say 3000 rpms for a period?
Thanks

Hi Tony,
Again, not really regarding the bedding in period IMO although it would be wise not to hugely labour the engine to start with.
As Rosscoe mentions, did you change the head bolts, and have the head skimmed?
Is it definetley bled correctly?

As far as I am aware I did everything by the book.

Hi Tony,
I didn't know you were having such trouble with your Disco. I need to get out with the club more.
Is it possible that you have air in your cooling system?
That always seems to come up when Td5s have these problems. Might be a doing it for a different reason than before you changed the gasket.
Good luck with it.

the head bolts are torque to yield so don't need retentioning
but they are damned tight when you do them up ay?

Yeah the head bolts are damn tight when doing them up.
Yes Pete, I had the head skimmed and 2 inlet valves replaced, so lets just hope that it could just be the final amount of air working its way through the system. I'll just have to watch those coolant drip issues from the header tank.
Thanks Guys

Hi Justin, long time no hear.
You and me both need to get out with the club more often, so I hear you.
I have had my fair share of issues with the Disco, similar to other on the forum. But, I have to admit that I am a tad pedantic, as Danny will tell you. I think I have almost got it right except this issue is worrying, especially if it cooks the motor.
Hope parenthood is going well for you both.
Tony
