20 years ago I cooked my 2.25 and using just the workshop manual was able to recondition the engine - I had no previous experience. I contracted out the machining and did the rest myself. Was pretty easy.
In my ignorance though, I used too much gasket sealer and soon after I started it up the oil pressure light came on. I dropped the sump and found the oil pickup strainer clogged with excess sealer. So two points here, use sealant sparingly and when you run it for the first time make sure your oil pressure gauge/light is connected.
Oh - 20 years later my old series 3 is still running around in Canberra and still running well.
