Thread: rebuilding 2.25 petrol

get a hold of the workshop manual, a set of feeler gauges and some plastigauge and have at it.

its probably one of if not the simplest engine on the planet to do a rebuild on. the hard parts will be grinding the crank boring the hones and sourcing the replacement bearings for it but the machine shop will take care of that for you.

As far as engines go you couldn't find a simpler one to rebuild.Get a good book on them to get the specs and a mic to check journals etc and go for it.I would chase up a running S/H one to keep you on the road and rebuild the original with a few tweaks. Pat

20 years ago I cooked my 2.25 and using just the workshop manual was able to recondition the engine - I had no previous experience. I contracted out the machining and did the rest myself. Was pretty easy.

In my ignorance though, I used too much gasket sealer and soon after I started it up the oil pressure light came on. I dropped the sump and found the oil pickup strainer clogged with excess sealer. So two points here, use sealant sparingly and when you run it for the first time make sure your oil pressure gauge/light is connected.

Oh - 20 years later my old series 3 is still running around in Canberra and still running well.

thanks for the info guys. i found a machine shop that will do the work. i know the engine has never been rebuilt before as the pistons have factory markings on them.

my mechanic says it hard to get good quality parts for these motors so i have been on the lookout and found a set of nos hepolite pistons that are 40'' over.

they seem like a good deal as i know that the brand is good and i can get them for as much as a set of pistons with no name. the only question is, would it be silly to get pistons of this size when i do not yet know if the bores will clean up at 40'' over? consider ing the block has never been touched?

just another thing, has any one heard of ks motopar pistons? found some of these too in almost all sizes.

if anyone knows of a good engine i can use in the mean time please let me know. thanks in advance!

Not getting parts for 2.25's is crap,I'd pull the head and measure the bores wear and condition before overboring it,I would spent the money on head work instead. Pat

sorry by that i meant that getting GOOD QUALITY parts is increasingly hard.

when i had the head off i found the pistons had a lot of room to move about in the bores.

i also noticed quite a lip forming at the top of each bore. i would not be surprised if i need new pistons and a rebore.

my mechanic is a very well respected dude in the land rover community. i have no reason to doubt him after looking for genuine parts myself.
