    New noise ??

    Hi All
I turned the key on the Discovery 2 TD5 the other morning and waited for all the lights to go out before firing her up and noticed a new noise.

It is a wirring noise, sounds like the cooling fan on a computer but a bit noisier and seems to be coming from under the dash on the RHS of the steering wheel.

It hangs around for a while after starting up from cold and then goes away and stays away until the next morning? No matter how many times I stop and start during the day.

Only seems to do this on colder mornings!

I'm thinking maybe a relay thats not coming on properly ??

Everthing seems to be working properly, apart from the new noise?

    any suggestions

    Thanks Andrew

There is a little vent on the right side of the dash adjacent to the ignition switch. I think air is drawn through this vent in connection with the climate control cabin temperature. So maybe you are hearing a fan.

Does it go away if you turn the aircon off?

    Thanks for the reply
I always turn the air con off prior to stopping the engine and it's not turned on in the morning when I start it. So it wouldnt be that.

    Thanks again Andrew

    Hi Andrew,

I think that little fan that Ferret is talking about runs on start up even if the aircon is not switched on. It then stops if the aircon is not turned on. It will be part of the cars electrical testing processes.

The same noise used to bug me no end until I worked out what is was and what it does.

    All the best
    Tony

    Thanks Tony,
you might be right I will have a look on the rave CD and see if I can locate this fan and if thats the case proberly stop stressing about the noise. Maybe it is getting a bit worn and thats why Im noticing the noise for the first time??

Anyone tell me where to start looking on the CD??

    Apoligies to Ferret

Seems like you were on the right track, Just had a look at the Rave CD, bloody thing looks more complicated than the space shuttle!

Does anyone have a basic explaination about this fan and it purpose?
It only seems to fire up on cold mornings?
Just went out and started the Disco, Temp outside 25C= No noise?
    Other morning 12C = Noise?

    Thanks Andrew

So that's what it is! ?

Mines done that ever since we bought it, and I just passed it off as a Disco thing .... like a mechanical whirring sound of some rotary device spinning up to speed when the ignition is turned on ... I notice it while waiting for the pre-flight check to complete

Have never related it to being temperature based ... time to do some investigation ... another item to add to the "to-do" list.

    Thanks

    Thanks Fluids
You have described the noise perfectly, I dont know if it's temp related or not, mine just seems to do it on cooler mornings and never does it later in the day no matter how many times I stop and start again?

Maybe mines just doing a Disco thing?

Will be intrested to hear if you find out more

Andrew, just went and checked it. Ignition ON, pre flight check running, EXT button on CC panel says 21degC ... it's whirring away happily ... I think it always does it ... but I've become so used to it I don't notice it very often ... and you don't hear it once the oiler fires up.

    ... it's a Disco thing
