Rear cargo door dust/exhaust fumes ingress

I have put up with the fumes ingress when the front windows are open and the usual lack of sealing against dust in the S1 Disco three door for far too long (ie since purchase back in 2003).

I decided to replace the rear cargo door seal as it is severely crushed and needed replacing at least after 16 years.

I did all the usual door, striker plate, striker pin adjustments and still had ingress of fumes, regardless of road speed. (Ironic that I now want to drive with the windows down now that the colder weather is approaching .

Contacted the usual places for door seal replacement. The LR Stealer wanted approx $150 for aftermarket, hate to think what OE would cost if still available.

Considered EBAY and EBAY UK options but they got close to the LR stealer cost. Didn't want to go down the 2nd hand option although my local Disco 1 dismantler is a nice bloke.

Then I popped into my local Clark Rubber and there on the shelf was the pinchweld in the same LR door seal profile. A bit pricey at $14.50 a metre, but still a better option than the others.

So if you are looking to replace any of your Disco or any other LR door seals, remember sometimes you don't have to look "further than your nose".

    Just my 2 cents worth.

They will be available from Landrover and should be way less than the $150, Series2 Disco has the same rear door seal as the Series1.

It may not be the rear door seal letting in the dust and fumes, check around the tail light assemblies, there is a rubber boot that seals the outer panel to the inner panel, you will have to take the t/light assembly out and check that the boot is in good condition and sealing properly. I smear a bit of rubber grease (or liquid soap) around the edges of the tail light so as it dont catch the boot and unseat it from the outer panel when sliding the t/light back in, if it's leaking you will see lots of dust in that area. Also check for any holes were wiring comes through. You may want to pull the inner plastic panels in the back and check if your's has air vents, if so get some good gaffer tape and seal them up, fixed mine, no more dust or fumes, Regards Frank.

I had heard that the series 2 and maybe later series 1 rear door rubbers were upgraded at some stage. If so, maybe a second hand D2 rubber would be the go.
