Mantec v Safari Snorkel

Thank you all for the various comments regarding airflow etc.

I must admit I struggle to understand how a snorkel looking back takes in more air then one facing forward when the vehicle is moving, while they are stationary or moving slowely there more then likely is very little difference if any at all. Panya's comment about winding down the window and listening to the snorkel sucking air in makes me wonder even more about the Mantec.

I know with airflows through ramair intakes on racing motorcycles things aren't always as they seem so whether or not this is also the case with the Mantec who knows?

The Mantec looks really good but does it work as well as a Safari? :confused:

Looks to me like the head of the Mantec is held on by a couple of pop rivets in Urban Panzer's pics.

I don't see why you couldn't spin the head around the other way?

He details the fitting of a Mantec snorkel to his Td5 with heaps of pics.
Since the V8 and Td5 share the same snorkel, I would expect the V8 to appear the same as in his pics.

From the pics, both brands appear to deliver air pretty much the same way.
I would doubt either one to be superior in performance to the other.

Again I have no direct experience with either for a D2, just an opinion. :unsure:

I don't think the head facing forward would make a huge difference - the engine sucks what air it wants IMO and the restriction seems to be the inlet into the airbox rather than anything on the snorkel side. You can turn the Mantec round but the head is angled on the pipe so the head is horizontal against the slope of the pipe coming up the window frame - turn it round and the head now angles up to the sky which looks a bit strange.

Looks crap would be the word I would use :D

The thing with the mantec, if its heavy rain or snow, then facing backwards tends to give it more protection, its also less likely to get "snagged" in deep foliage, don't have any "running issues" with mine tbh, and as previously posted the TD5 sucks in as much as it wants, facing back or forward.

What diameter tube does the Mantec snorkel use?

You should be able to pick up a Mantec from UK for around $550 delivered to your door. Have a search of the UK sites and take advantage of the good exchange rate. FYI, I just received a D2 Safari snorkel from First Four for around $460. Delivery in under 2 weeks and great to deal with.

They do Mantec snorkels as well, but can't find one listed for the D2. If you send an email, they are very prompt to reply.

I think the big problem with the snorkels is how well they match the inner guard and allow air to pass through into the standard intake port. This section and then through into the air cleaner is really restrictive.

I recently had my Discovery on a 4x4 rolling road and was able to do some power runs with and without the Mantec fitted.
The blue curve was with the Mantec fitted @ 98.9hp at the wheel and the orange curve of 103.1hp is with the Mantec removed from the airbox.

The guy doing my mapping was Mark Adams from the UK who for those who don't know him is probably the most knowlegable man on the planet when it comes to the 14CUX.
Mark told me that he'd seen poorly designed snorkels giving a drop in hp of upto 35%...I won't mention the brand of snorkel on an open forum but it was from a reputed supplier out of the UK. It's not Safari or Mantec in case you're wondering.

Testing the ram air effect of a snorkel on a rolling road is quite difficult as you can see by the picture the cooling fan is situated right infront of the grill and doesn't hit the air intake of the snorkel.
I beleive that any 'ram air' generated by a forward facing intake is quickly negated by the solid mass of the air filter anyways.
Also consider the few mm of clearance that is between the trumpets and the inside of the plenum.....it's hardly condusive to generating more power!

I fitted a mantec snorkel yesterday,after i had to wait almost 6 months :mad: to arrive.
Thanks to urban panzer,i had a clue of what to do,because if you read the "mini" instructions of mantec you end up with something else..
It requiered a lot of triming on the inside of the fender,not mentioned.
The filter box needed sealing at 5 places,not mentioned.
It requiered even more triming to get the joint b2ween the filter box(oval hole) and matec iron tube,not mentioned,if anybody just bolts these 2 things just like the manual,you 'll end up with a good aquarium-air box.
From performance point of view now..
When i downloaded stage 1 td5 alive with a nanocom,it became a different beast(before the snorkel).
It revved freely over 4k rpm,not that i drive it like that,but after fitting the snorkel,the engine struggles after 3500 rpm - quite noticable difference,i tried the top in various positions - no significant change,i 'll try a big mushroom type top.
A little loss also around 1600-1800 rpm,like before tuning:(
Mixed feelings for now,i 'll drive a little bit more and i 'll report back.

Has anybody with a snorkel else seen such power loses at 3.5-4k rpm range.
