A lot of the Poms use Valvoline VR1 in their V8's, but check that it's the same brew as they can get, the last time I had a look at an Oz zpec VR1 TDS it was a lighter weight oil.
ZDDP isn't the only ant-wear additive on the block, but it was cheap and very very effective so blenders used it and it now has 'the name' for an anti-wear additive in a high scuff zone.
Unfortunately it is implicated in 'poisoning' cat converters, so levels in modern blends have been reduced dramatically.
There are other additives like modern borate esters which are generally more effective again than ZDDP but more expensive.
FWIW I used to use M1 15W-50 for years in a 351 Cleveland without an issue, as did a few Chev race engine builders I knew, but that is a fully synthetic brew.
I'd be looking at a good diesel/fleet oil, one that has dual diesel and petrol ratings.
Up until a couple of years ago Pennzoil Long Life 15W-40 CH-4 had high (>1500PPM) ZDDP levels and was dual rated although primarily a diesel oil. I'm not sure if later CI-4 and CI-4+ blends have had the ZDDP reduced.

Thanks for the info Rick. That Valvoline VR1 looks the goods, however, the Aus/ NZ blend is a 'synthetic enhanced' 10W-40 which is probably too thin and would kill my sloppy old Rover V8 with gunk under all over the rockers and 178kms? VR1 would probably be the go if I ever rebuilt the motor.
Has anybody had experiemce with Elf Oils? They do a 15W-50 mixed fleet oil that would probably be quite good? Not sure on the zinc levels tho.

When I had my 3.9 I just used the same Penrite diesel oil that I use in the Tdi,IMHO older style V8's stay cleaner running diesel oil. Pat
You are correct, t5he Penrite web site shows the fully synthetic Sin 5 diesel.
I emailed the tech there about it and changing to it in the TD5.
His reply was they are discontinuing it and to use the semi synth Diesel 5 oil.
Seeing as I'm running the diesel 5 with excellent perofrmance (have been using it in all TD5s for years) I'm happy to stay with the benefits of it.
I use SIN in the AT and Gears though

Personal choice for diesel is Mobil Delvac1 or their Delvac synthetic E7/E6 rated. I have it in the TD5 and get it from work. Minimum spec oil for most Mercedes Benz diesel vehicles these days, including heavy truck.

D1 is good stuff, used it for at least nine years but swapped to the Penrite Diesel SP on the recommendation of my oil analyst as my UOA's deteriorated. (remember my big ends)
