I settled on 680 degrees Celsius after much scouring of this forum. Maybe a little conservative but much cheaper than destroying my engine.
In practice this means that I start to back off around 650 degrees as there's likely to be a bit of a lag in the response of the probe.
Mine is set at 750 Reasons.
1/ A very annoying buzzer/alarm activates when this is reached, so I wont hold it here for long without getting annoyed.
2/ This the general recomendation from the industry.
3/ This is an exhaust gas temperature not engine component temperature.
Think about passing your hand through a candle or passing an oxy torch flame over something. Even though the flame temperature hasnt changed, with care you could be as gentle to wiring heatshrink or nasty enough to melt steel if you keep it there long enough.
You are in control with the ability to effect instant responses to high EGT.
Set it to where you feel most comfortable and confident.

i too am more than confident in 750 as an upper limit.

I think you're on the money Phil.
I hooked up the wires this morning and even a moderate squirt returns 450*C without any real effort. And that was on level/undulating ground.
PS It would be interesting to know what temps a stock engine achieved, as no doubt the LR mob would be quite conservative.
i cant say for a TDi but a stock eu3 TD5 is 750 absolute tops,
now think about how many stock TD5's there are and how there driven, if its anything like how i drove mine when stock the egt's would be constantly round the 700deg mark on a highway run.
and how many TD5's do we see with melted pistons??

Tested it on the weekend. Sure enough, not at all hard to hit 800+*C towing the CT up hills on the highway.
What I did find interesting was on a trip through the scrub. Down a steep track, engine braking in 1st low against compression. Went down to 58*C. Now that DID surprise me.
No fuel is added during downhill, just a straight air pump... Hence lower EGTsQuote:
