Half of your cooling issues will be the Davis Craig fans...
Otherwise, a good re-core of the radiator thats in there, an engine flush, new coolant and all should be good.
Hello everyone,
We live on the Gold Coast and own a Series 1 V8 3.9 Disco. We are needing to put a new radiator into our car. Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced place to purchase one from? and Also what are the best Radiators that fit this model Disco. We already have 2 Douglas Graig fans in to help with cooling so all that is now needed it a Radiator. Any help would be really appreciated.
Thanks in advance Andrea

Hiya and thanks for the advice. We have had the radiator flushed and the engine rebuilt. It was Rick at Ricks 4wd that suggested the fans and installed them. The car is still overheating, we were told that we would need to possibly re core or replace the Radiator. We tow a 17 ft caravan so we are looking for a radiator that Will keep the oils and motor cool when travelling....
Hi again Andrea!
Particularly when towing, nothing beats the original engine driven fan for cooling capability. The amount of air the factory fan flows is HUGE compared to the thermo fans.
If the radiator is in good condition I would suggest making sure the factory shroud is on the radiator AND then pull the fans off and put a new fan clutch hub and engine driven fan assembly on.
I wouldnt be surprised if it goes back to running normal.
If the fans are fitted under the shroud, or no shroud is fitted then they just wont keep up at all. Hence your overheating!
Davis Craig fans are IMO total rubbish.... IF you wanted to run thermo fans then the EL falcon fans (complete with shroud assembly) are the only really successful ones used... They flow better rates etc than the D.C. ones. Even then, for your application the engine driven fan, and possibly an electric fan front mounted (if the factory ones are dead) would be the optimum for towing.
Was that a just a flush, or was it actually rodded (ie ends off and tubes physically cleared).
If it was just a flush chances are its still blocked. Take it to somewhere like Natrad (should be one in your area somewhere) as they have lots of branches across the country so if you have any hassles with it while travelling there should be someone close to look at it under warranty.
If the core is still OK they should be able to rod it, if not you are up for a recore or replacement item.
Steve
Thanks Tombie and Steve,
as for the fans apparently we have 3 the original cooling fan and the two Davis Craig Fans. My husband said that the radiator was just flushed. So Steve thanks for the heads up re Natrad. Just as a matter of curiosity any idea's on costs or what one could expect to pay for re rodding?
Thanks again to the both of you.......
Hi
Just having the radiator rodded should be in the order of $100 (I pay $80 but get a few done). However, to have the radiator removed, rodded and replaced will be considerably more.
Erich
Thanks Bundalene for that I appreciate it.....So tired of getting ripped off at least now I have some what of an idea may be a reasonable price just for Re Rodding. I think it may need to be removed and re rodded though. This seems to be the normal for our car nothing is ever easy......But then hey aren't most cars costly to repair and maintain...........Thanks...
