Hydraulic Winches...Any good?

You'd be surprised actually...... I've winched across a river on batteries, then checked the engine over and then re-started....

Theres only 1 situation where you wouldnt have the engine running and this is deep water recovery.... An electric winch will pull you the length of its wire and start the vehicle after in 99% of cases - 35Mtrs of cable is comparable to a decent 'cranking' session on the starter motor :cool:

But yes, line speed of a dedicated PTO driven Hydraulic winch is a thing of beauty...... :D

im guessing the electric set up on my old RR wasnt up to spec....I did a pull 2/3 cable length and it was dead....mind you it wasnt a stony river bed etc. axle deep mud.....but I didnt install the set up so it may have been sub par

What a timely thread. Just been looking around for a winch for my Puma 110.

TJM (Adelaide) say they no longer have the Ox, they are selling the Premier hydraulic ($2800) - works off power steering pump like the Ox/Mile Marker.

I have been trying to find some specs as too how fast a winch will work off the power steering pump and all I get is "very slow". You can get a belt driven pump which will give high flow and hence much more speed but there is no place to fit one.

I have previously had a Thomas winch off a PTO and this was awsome.

I am OK with a slow speed, but am more worried about warranty issues using the power steering pump. I guess LRA would most likely blame the winch set-up if I had steering problems.

I have almost put it in the too hard basket and am starting to look at electric winches - unfortunately.

Be nice if someone made a 12v pump. Need to draw less than the alternator puts out though, say 50 - 60Amps?

there are plenty of stand alone 12v elec/hydro pumps...small ones are used on mini truck cranes etc...I have one for a custom project down the track.....they are a complete unit with res etc

if you have a pto you can run a hyd pump off that. MD made there chain drive pto with forward facing output and some with forward/ rear, you could bolt up a hyd pump to the rear. Then of course there is the hyd pto which is a direct coupling. I think MR still does these. Ive even seen a dual output hyd pto by MD :cool:

Probably get less out of a 12V than you get from your power steering unit. How about a small petrol engine driving a larger capacity pump? Not sure how you get that mounted on the bull bar and have it road legal though?

I would be inclined to go with the PTO driven pump, that way the winch can run faster. But you'd really have to consider cost vs benefit then. Are PTO's really that good compared to electric? I would only use the winch to get me out of trouble, so I wouldn't really need it to winch all day long.

Remember the basic principles of hydraulics. Pressure = force or power. Flow = speed.

I doubt if a 12v electric motor powered hydraulic pump will give enough of either for recovery winching of a vehicle.

I bought my Milemarker direct from the US about 6 years ago, cost me landed here just over $1800, compared to the $2800 that TJM wanted for the OX which was a renamed Milemarker. I also bought a separate hydraulic pump from the UK so I could have a stand alone power unit.
It was first installed on my Range Rover and then I installed it to my first D3. It is now fitted to my current D3 although not running as yet as I am working on a new power take off system.
I believe It was a world first to have an independently powered hydraulic winch in a D3.
I have set it up as an independently powered unit with its' own dedicated hydraulic pump thus having a faster retrieve and allowing the power steering to have no interference.
The beauty of a hydraulic winch is that it will pull all day without overheating and draw around 2 amps.
