Just to be a little bit random here, I am happy with how my truck flexes. It is retained both ends. The only thing that I would really like to play with is the removal of front and rear sway bars. Well.... maybe... I would, however, love more flex out of the front (to try and match the back) but I am not sure how to go about it. One idea that I had was to change out the front shocks and change them to pin to eye... But hey, I am just a mug.
With the front end the restriction is in the radius arm bushes at the diff end, pin/pin shocks work Ok up to at least 10" travel. (i'll dig up a pic of the bush distortion)Quote:

OK, here's a pic of a flogged out Haultech 'Holy Bush' with the front end flexed up.
A stock triple shell Disco bush (one outer, one inner sleeve where the bolt passes through and a middle sleeve vulcanised in between the rubber) will not allow anywhere near this level of distortion, they act as an anti-roll bar by restricting the twist of the axle housing.
Note that Defenders only use a twin shell bush and so allow more distortion in this area, but no where near this much.

from all of the information in this thread, i will be fabbing up a set of dislocation cones for the rear and installing them, there is only one way to find out if it works for me or not
i currently have my springs wired in at the top, i very rarely get stuck due to lack of articulation, but i still feel i need to try dislocated out
Well I have them on the rear and I like mine.
However I do feel that is very much what you drive and how you drive..as to whether you really need them to dislocate or not.
for a comparison this is Ian in the wombat holes that Phil showed above he made it through with out much effort and this is a completely standard vehicle even down to the land rover shocks.
the difference is Ian tipped into the hole slightly once tackling the object where as Phil just crawled through the lot with his articulation and lockers.
Ian made it through easy (and I think that is down to his skill as a driver) but phil made it look effortless (very good driver skill but coupled with a well modified car which suited the terrain)

The trouble with arguements like this is we are talking about 90's-110's-RRC's-Disco's that are vastly different vehicles used for different applications and the owners want different results so there isn't a right or wrong answer.Just as a footnote I used to live 10 mins from appin and the hole in the second photo used to be where most vehicles failed to proceed,the fact that a factory stock defender walked it speaks volumes for LR's factory suspension. Sure but I thought it would be a good comparison as both cars mine and phils that did it on the same day are 90's both set up very different:)
good photos and info, the only problem is you are comparing 2 different vehicles and one fairly stock and one definitly not....take a defender set up with the same amount of detail as Phil's but built around a retained system and you would have had a different outcome again........

I find it hard to see how a retained spring will do what phils 90 has done..I can only think that it will behave pretty much in the same manor as my car above.
Does anyone have any footage of retained setup actually off road? would be interesting to watch..well for me anyway:D
the only way a retained coil can flex as much as phil's is by actually being much higher in it's free length to start with.
My mate has a Patrol and it has a 7 inch spring lift 2inch body 35 inch tyres adjustable ever thing the point is my 2inch lifted county with my custom shock mounts I am able to flex up the same as he can, my shock thengths are the same as a his, my rear shock travel is 12.8 inch.
When we where parked next to each other we noticed that chassis and sill where very close to the same height despite the differance of 4 inch in spring height. His coils are retained and can be as they have a free lenght that is compatable with the shock open lenght. So it stand to reason that if you haven't got a huge spring lift but want travel then you need to run longer shocks and relocation cones.
