D2 TD5 Inlet manifold removal
After removing the EGR I was shocked/stunned/gob-smacked
at the amount of oil/soot in the inlet manifold. After installing a provent, installing silicone hoses and cleaning the inter-cooler, I want to remove the inlet manifold and clean it thoroughly.
My question is whether there a 'correct sequence' for removing and then reinstalling the bolts for the manifold. Also, apart from a new inlet manifold gasket, is there anything else I should be considering while doing this job?

You don't need to remove the bolts in sequence, and only need to replace the inlet gasket. You will have t clean you inlet ports as well as it will be caked on there as well. Removing that stuff is not an easy task, and your hands and clothes will get filthy. I gave up cleaning mine myself and gave it to the machining place to clean when I got the head machined. They put it in their "dish washer" and it cleaned it well.

I was covered in oil/soot after just trying to clean as much of the inlet manifold as I could while it was in place, so it is going to be rubber gloves and disposable overalls when I take the manifold off.
I was thinking of using plenty of rags (with some diesel) to tackle the ports, but I am not looking forward to it as the 'gunk' seems like 'treacle stuck to a blanket'

I think the LR part number is STC9713 for the solvent they use to clean out the intercooler with. Either this or good old petrol will be enough to disolve it.
Planning to do mine in the next few weeks.

cleaner
I used 2 cans of throttle body cleaner & some degreaser to clean mine.
a very messy job.

yeah I think that a degreaser and maybe a solvent could be the go once the manifold is off the engine. I plan on blasting the manifold with air and degreaser from a 'kero gun' and then see if I need to use a solvent as well, again via the kero gun.
The hardest part of the job could be the inlet ports - I do not want to spray anything in there or use anything that could cause a problem once the manifold is back on; so I plan on using plenty of rags and some diesel for that part of the job; as well as making sure that everything is left to sit unassembled for 24 hours prior to re-assembly to let any fumes dissipate.

i just removed my inlet manifold last night and holy **** what a painfull job why would you put bolts/nuts where it is impossible to get to ahhh there was curing of land rover and BMW
?(TD5)last night glad my daughter was asleep
it going to get a good wash today at the engine rebuilders done the road

How MUCH of a **** of a job is this....?
I have the fuel cooler off to replace the O-RIngs, so I have kind of "started", but not sure I want the heartache. Having just done the provent, EGR removal, vnt etc myself, It urks me how filthy it is up there....but Im still not sure I want to pull the intake off.
As an alternative, I have a custom inlet on it, with a port for a boost pressure guage. Is it worth removing the guage once the engine is hot, and then spraying throttle body cleaner or similar in there whilst at idle??

I got bored, so went and took it off....I must say, not too bad....given I already had the fuel cooler off, and having previously permanently removed all the EGR crap behind the coolant reservoir, and the egr cooler off the front of the block, it only took about 30 minutes....plus another 15 undoing the electrical harness which was threaded through the intake.
Off to buy copious amounts of throttle body cleaner.!

Yep, there's a lot to be gained from removing the EGR as SOON as possable. I got rid of mine at 55000Km's. Oil is cleaner, no hot oxygen devoid, soot laden gasses getting passed back into intake........it's all good!!!!
