Strange noise from V8 engine - Video attatched!
Following on from my 'why wont it start' thread which is now happily fixed, I have a strange engine noise of which I am not sure of the cause.
I have put a video below to show the noise. Does anyone have any ideas? The video actually picks it up a bit more than it sounds. (hopefully it doesn't get messed up by the upload)
I have had the rocker covers off and it isnt a stuck valve. They are all moving correctly. What else could it be? Stuck tappets(s), big ends!??
The engine was last run a fairly long time ago (maybe 6 months) and sounded fine then. It also has the correct amount of oil in it.

Hello Peter,
As it was running 6 months ago and working fine then, I would be inclined to think it may well be a stuck lifter. They have rotate as they follow the camshaft lobe, and if it sticks it will be belted with each rotation. All the lifters and the camshaft will then need to be changed, as the camshaft lobe is likely to be damaged.
The noise sounds rapid and not particularly heavy, so a bottom end problem i think is less likely.

Thanks Ron, Thats what I am thinking it may be...... Guess I will be learning how to take apart and put back together v8's!
I agree that the noise sounds quite fast and light.
Thanks Stig, no its definetely not the exhaust. I have already had that off again to be sure

I remember that noise , reminds me of a Pushrod thats punched itself through the rocker arm . Check all your pushrod to rocker clearances .(PS shouldnt be any clearance , Silly rover V8's run 40 to 60 thou pre-load )

Big End
Sorry to sound like the grim reaper but I have to disagree. Unfortunately it has the hollow sound of a big end bearing.
Tappets, valve train noises tend to be a lot "sharper" or "tinnyer".
A good way to check if it is a big end is to pull the injector lead or plug lead off each cylinde,r one at a time.
If it is big end the noise will almost stop on the crook cylinder, if it is valve train the noise won't change.
Hopefully you'll prove me wrong.

I concurr with potential for lifter noise. If it's been sitting then they could have drained (being hydraulic) possibly will correct itself. Else R&R cam/valvetrain and replace as described previous.

Ok, I just started it for a minute and pulled the leads off one at a time. No change in noise.
However I did notice that the exhasut manifold on cylinders 2 (front drivers side) and 3 (second one on passenger side from front) dont get any where as near hot as fast as the others?

Lack of oil pressure in lifter no acting on pushrod and opening valve therefore not achieving ignition in some cylinders?
Opinions?

My 3.9 in my SD1 sat under the carport for a year and when i started it again it had a terrible tick tick tick noise.Same thing as you.Wasnt there before that. And i knew it was a good motor.I spoke to an oil specialist about it and he told me to put 500ml of diesel in the motor and run it to operating temp. Then flush it and replace with new oil and filter. And what do you know the noise was gone.It must of had a stuck lifter and this helped to clean it out.Hope this helps.
