Axle stands

G'day all,

I have a '92 disco and next to stuff all mechanical experience. At the moment the clutch isn't working and I have, rightly or wrongly, decided that replacing the master and slave cylinder might get her back on the road. I am going to have a crack myself and feel I should be able to rise to the occasion.

It looks like it might be a good idea to get some axle stands to prop up the front end. I want something that is more than very safe. What brands and specs should I be looking at?

I suppose a trolley jack wouldn't be a bad idea either. Any opinions on these would also be greatly accepted.

Dunno about brands of axle stands, but my way of thinking would be that as long as the welds look solid, and the stands are rated for the weight that you plan to put on them, then you can't really go far wrong. Certainly a lot safer than my past experiments with pavers, bricks, kerbstones, the spare wheel, scaffold boards, logs, etc, etc

I have a set of these and they are great. I was going to go for the 12T stands but they were actually so tall I thought they might be of less use.

to support the front of a disco you only need 750kg stands and unless your working on the steering or suspension where you need to get the weight off of the wheels then you're probabley better off getting a pair of wheel ramps.

a 1.5t trolly jack will do the job of lifting either end but a 2T unit makes it a lot easier.

The axle stands I bought from Mals were about $80 for a 1000kg rating.

These worked well when dropping the R380 out of the 130, I also had a bottle jack and a proper transmission jack that I found at Kennards Hire. It worked a treat.

If you plan on doing a bit more DIY, then get a QUALITY trolley jack and it will last you a long time. Repair kits are usually available for them as well. The 2t ($19.95) trolley jack in a handy blow mould case from Supercrap is not going to cut it.

I have an Armstrong 2.5t trolley jack that you can take the standard lifting cup out and fit a one that holds a gearbox, which I think your are going to need anyway (clutch issues ??)

Hate the stands where you put a pin through a hole, somehow the holes are never at the right height.

Of course, the screw adjust ones take forever to get to the right spot, but you get there.

they look pretty good. I was checking out their website today at work when another fella looked over my shoulder and said he's bought a fair bit of gear there and reckons its good stuff. I'll drop in and get some on Monday.

He also mentioned that Costco sometimes have aluminium trolley jacks rated to 4t for about $170. Anyone else here seen these?
