Hmmm, I would have the autos faults cleared and see what it does or if it comes back. If so it may very well be rebuild time.
I need diagnostic help from the gurus.
I get a single clunk in the transmission when braking as I get down to about 20km/h. Only occurs in DRIVE, if I coast and brake in NEUTRAL it does not occur. It never occurs more than once on a decel and sometimes not at all.
All UJs are good, splines in prop shafts ok, slop in diffs seems about the usual standard. Auto box is flaring between second and third, but the clunk has come more recently. I think the auto problem started from ATF starvation from sludge in the filter. Is this likely to be related or something else? Could it be in the CV joints, I get no noises on turning?
Is this symptomatic of something anyone has seen before? I suspect showing in Drive and not in Neutral might mean something but I dont know what.

I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken.
Check the transmission brake adjustment.
The drum gets dust in it and drags on deceleration if it adjusted up to close giving a shuddering effect although I don't know about a single clunk.
It does it on the Defenders anyway.

Do you get any "clunks" at gear shifts during acceleration? Mine (TD5 Auto)was doing that and had no power for the first 10-20 seconds after start - fixed by fitting new MAF.

20km/h slowing down is your Torque Converter clutch unlocking...
Flared changes, etc is either:
- low fluid / filter blocked (cheap)
- Out of spec MAF (moderate)
- Stuffed Gearbox (Expensive)
When I worked at DPI , one of the directors bought/leased himself a 2001 AFAIR.
They put 3 LT230s in it because of clunks, and even the final one which was hand built still clunked but not as badly as the others.
So my guess it is the LT230 now it has some age on it. You will get that with any gear driven transfer.

not knowing much about D2, I might be way off, but the ZF on D1's will clunk downshifting at low speeds if the kick down cable is too tight....
I have not researched the D11 but certainly the 4HP22 in a 3.9 RRC or Disco 1 will change down to first as the car comes under 10Kmh or so. On some occasions even with a BW transfer you will get a clunk as it does this.I get a single clunk in the transmission when braking as I get down to about 20km/h. Only occurs in DRIVE, if I coast and brake in NEUTRAL it does not occur. It never occurs more than once on a decel and sometimes not at all.
I think it likely that the 4HP22EH probably drops down through 2nd and first as it comes to a halt and the clunk is caused by slop in the transfer caseduring the torque reversal.
