Hold the rod and push it hard in the direction needed to remove it, then with a heavy lump hammer hit the side of the lever adjacent the tapered pin of the end. It may take 4 or 5 blows. The weight of the hammer seems to be the important factor.
If that doesn't work, then you'll need to use one of the tapered tools for removing CV and ball joints to wedge it out. If you use this method it will damage the ball joint and that will need to be replaced.


. Seems the logical thing to do would be to bash them up (retaining nuts are removed) but that doesn't seem to work.
