For fast drivers who use the speed limit leeway..

A lot of this is driven by business which has a product to sell. They have figured out a very good sales patter which works very well on governments. You cannot really blame them for this as it is their role to sell believe the blame lies with the ignorant customers (in this case the government) who cannot understand and see through the sell.

Same happens here with both Speed cameras and CCTV cameras. Both have great sales campaigns by the retailers with little to show in actual results. So it does not work exactly as we said just means sir that you need the newer bigger version then it will work. Rather than questioning why it will work this time when did not before just swallow the sales patter and buy again so do not have to admit were wrong to buy the first time round.

We do not have fixed spped cameras around here. The police still actively monitor speed via speed guns and traps. In most places in the UK these have been replaced with fixed spped cameras and the police removed from the road. Every so often a 'safety campaigner' appears in the media to complain that the police here are not taking speed seriously as we do not have fixed speed cameras. It is this blinkered mind set of the people who make the decisions that is the real problem.

There was and is an ongoing out cry but those in power will not [or is that can not] listen. Their ears are stuffed full of millons of easy dollars.

There is also a push in the media for compulsory advanced driver training for all drivers along with compulsory refresher driver courses as well as for compulsory re-testing throughout a drivers life time. The ADR's (federally 18.5.1.1.2)state that a cars speedo must be within 10% but the state govt is enforcing laws that are less than HALF that margin with others looking to follow suit in the pursuit of money! Have a read and see the fault! By law any car company can sell a car that shows you doing 100(on the speedo) but in reality you are doing 109 and being sent a ticket by the victorian deputy tax office!

We should have for all new drivers compulsory advanced driver training at purpose built facilities, dealing with rain, braking and crash avoidance ,aquaplaning , dirt road driving, ice and snow for nsw, vic and tassie etc
They dont want to do this as it will cost money and reduce income! In other countries where they introduced it speeding and most importantly accident(and death) numbers among those trained DROPPED signifigantly proving it's worth by saving a teens life!(austria from memory)

I am pretty sure the ADRs allow a 10% variation on the side of optimism, but no variation on the side of pessimism.

That is to say the speedo can read 100kph and you can be travelling slower, but it can't read 100kph and have the vehicle travelling faster.

In that case, provided you keep at the posted limit according to your speedo it should be impossible to get caught speeding.

Bigjohn the adr is + or - which is either way! your speedo shows 100 but in reality you could be anywhere from 90 to 110 !!! And under adrs it's still legal.

Those in other States should realise that if NSW also implements it, all other States will eventually follow Vic and NSW.

The national uniform road rules together with the increased revenue seen to be collected will ensure that.

The annoying thing in all this is that what was a 110 limit now becomes 100-105Kmh, because modern speedos are ALWAYS optomistic and many people stick to 110 thinking they are actually doing that speed.

Now they will slow down a bit so that they cannot creep over so the traffic will go 100-105 .

I note this often on my trip down the F3 into Sydney. While many are law scoffers and travel at an indicated 115-120 (which is a real 110-115) there is quite a proportion that either have lost a few points or are believers of the Government speed kills spiel plodding along at 105 and often in the RH lane.

I noticed this also in Victoria where the speeds on the new Eastern tollway were usually lower than the posted limit.

I am generally not passed by many keeping to a GPS 110 which is 114 in My Honda Jazz.

BTW I am pretty sure that the ADR for speedos has only allowed plus 10% accuracy for many years now, and that is why most recent cars have Plus 5-10% to allow for tyre wear and diameter differences.

I think you're right, Philip.

Both our 2005 and 2009 Subaru Foresters indicate 118km/h when travelling at 110 km/h as indicated on the GPS.

As several people pointed out in another thread, safe driving is more about attitude than ability and my reading of a couple of articles about the Austrian system supports that.

One said."The findings regarding course characteristics support a psychological approach that puts the focus mainly on life-style, habits and attitudes in general."

Another said,"We discovered that the most important issue in safety is that drivers realize their personal limits as well as the limits of the vehicle. Then they will realize that even a small reduction in speed can lead to a big increase in safety."

People seem to assume that drivers who do those courses are safer because they have learned to control a skid. Those articles and other research show that they are safer because they have discovered how quickly and unexpectedly control can be lost. They become safer, not because they have learned advanced driving skill, but because they have learned something about the laws of physics and the limits of their own ability.

There is more to be gained by improving a driver's attitude than by improving his or her ability.

This law was restated december 13 2006 with the +and - symbol next to the 10% so the law stands today!
p.s any car built BEFORE that date also has a 10% or greater leeway as the adrs only apply to cars built after the date passed! Have a think about when the seatbelt laws came in , any vehicle built before that date did not have to have them and still dont! I remeber one truck driver telling the OH&S nazi to **** off when told to put his seat belt on or leave the site, as his truck was built in the late 60's or early 70's it did not legally need to have belts fitted so even though he had re-done the motor/interior several times over 30 odd years he had never had them fitted and was allowed to drive without seat belts:D
