For fast drivers who use the speed limit leeway..

Looks like NSW will follow the other states - some will have to slow down a little bit if this comes in, eh?

    Fines for 4km/h over limit

so it's really just a tax, or a surcharge, for using your own roads ?

When you think about it, 4K's over the limit is the width of the speedo indicator, that's cutting it too fine, you have to allow for variables and I think the current leeway is very fair. What it will mean is that you will spend most of your time watching the speedo and the rest looking out for speed limit signs which are constantly changing as you drive along, leaves little time to actually drive the car safely.
Even the Police are not for it and when I heard a private company (as in Victoria) are going to operate the system, that straight away yells "REVENUE RAISING"!!!
With tolerances this fine they are not allowing for the fact that we are human and not robots. The other thing that worries me is that people who need their licence for their job will be badly affected by this as they are on the road more than the average driver and if they lose their licence it will affect their livelihood and its making me think that perhaps the State is stepping over the line as a Police State and intruding into peoples lives as they go about their daily business.
I am very surprised there has not been a public outcry in Victoria and also Queensland over this. I hear the Macquarie Bank is interested in buying the operating company out and as Macquarie Bank would have to be the greediest bank in Australia you know they would not be interested if there was not a dollar to be made. End of Rant

That's the way I look at it. It has little to do with road safety or law enforcement.

They will probably catch people using the Hume Highway, because it is such a poor road...

I went through 2 radar speed checks on the Western Hwy a couple of weeks ago. They display your speed as you drive past. The speed limit there is 110kph.

I was in the Defender, with the cruise control set to 109kph based on GPS speed (The GPS gives me an over speed warning at 110kph). The first radar said I was doing 112kph, and the 2nd said I was doing 104kph.

So there's not just the speedo variable, but the radar variable to consider, and 4kph seems too fine a line.

I'd trust a satellite system based on atomic clocks that can guide international flight more than a (lowest tender wins) contractor's radar.
