Discovery Series II 3rd row seat trap
I'm posting this hoping I might save someone a lot of trouble and expense if they are considering fitting 3rd row seats into their series II Discovery. I was recently caught out, as I'm sure many have before, buying a pair of 3rd row seats for my series II Discovery off ebay before checking up as to what is involved in fitting them. Without all the interior trim (side panels, pillars and rear of roof), seat belts, head rests and floor locking plates, the seats are absolutely useless.
After calling a few local (Melbourne) service centers and being quoted ridiculous prices (up to $2,000) for second hand 3rd row seat kits (one even offered to take my leather seats off me and sell me a vinyl kit for $1,650!). They won't sell you the bits you need individually either.
As a last resort I tried Triumph Rover Spares who are a very large wrecker/dealer in South Australia. The bloke knew exactly what I needed as he said he had helped many people in the past who had been caught out buying ebay seats. The whole lot, minus the seats came to $690 including freight back to Victoria.
I still have to fit the seats etc, which I'm not looking forward to as there is a lot of trim to remove and re-fit and I hate trimming, but this could have been a very costly exercise if I had just gone with the first dealer I called or even the one who used to service my Disco.
