    V8 Disco

Hi, I'm new to the forum, about 6 months i think...I have a problem..I have a 1998 disco V8, will not start.Have had a few overheating problems on the beach lately that i have been going to overcome with a radiator replacement..(only overheating on beach)...Last saturday we shut the engine down and Sunday morning it would not start..Tilt tray to auto lecs and they can not determine starting problem..They seem to think it is mechanical, plenty of spark, fuel to injectors but low compression on some cylinders which seems odd because 2 weeks ago i had a full engine diagnosis and they think engine is in good condition.. No oil in water or water in oil, Doesn't use any oil, doesn't blow any smoke but will not start...Has anyone any ideas because i am turning to alcohol to stop me from gettimg depressed...HELP ME...

Not sure where you are but a Land rover mechanic is the way to go.
A auto electrician is fine but only if they know what they are looking for.

Over heating is pretty much a death sentence on all vehicles not just landies.
Alloy heads will warp, twist and move and a good cooling system is a must and especially before being put under load like beach driving which can also cook a auto tranny(fit a oil cooler).
I believe you did a head gasket or a slipped liner.
A 98 model will have a 3.9L motor, if it does need a rebuild, I would suggest a 4.6, they go so much better. I know its only a slight increase but by golly, its chalk and cheese.
Good luck. Check compression and while there, perhaps also all hoses as a vacuum may have slipped off or something.
Fuel air lock also maybe if it got really hot under there.

    v8 disco

Thanks Big Guy...I've been around land rovers and had a few V8'S for about 20 years, didn't get it that hot to damage engine i would think but it didn't happen straight away after beach driving...We went to a party on saturday night and the handbrake dropped me back at home early and when she drove off to return to party i heard it popping off into intake( backfiring ) and thought it must of had a crook plug lead so next morning i purchased a set of leads and fitted them and then it would not start...Thought maybe i had brought wrong leads so fitted old leads and it still would not start...Only took it to auto lecs because 1st diagnosis was that it had no pulse (no power to injectors) but after auto lecs had it for a day they said they had it wrong, it did have power to injectors (if they had told me that in the 1st place it would have went to mechanics) I am 100% sure i have leads on in the correct firing order as i have done that many times before but it bewilders me as no one seems to know why it will not start....These things are meant to test us as they say!!!! I'm not giving up yet...HAIL LAND ROVERS!!!!

Roddles replace the rotor use gen Lucas only I have had this before on my rangie pop pop pop then nothing would not start or do anything all good one minute then dead the next. U check spark at coil all good but the rotor stops the spark at the dissy, I think the overheating part is coincedince.
new rotor and it burst into life

    Hey Roddles,

I'm sorry for you troubles. Do we assume your electrical guys would have checked the HT side too? If you're getting a spark at the plugs, power to the injectors that leaves only 101 other things! Also assuming she turns over but won't fire at all.
I have had a failure because of bad contact on the air flow meter plug before. Also fuel failure, can you smell fuel coming through, does the pressure rail have fuel in it? If there's no fuel present you definitely have a direction!
    Keep the faith
