Thread: Rear diff pinion seal and transfer case leaks

I purchased my Disco 02model new, and had the front pinion seal leak, and was fixed once and has not leaked since. Generally I have had only positive experience from the LR dealer in Melbourne, and any thing that may have given a hint of not quiet right or possibly leaking was replaced under warranty no hassels and these were all picked up by the dealer, not me. Never had to return with a reoccuring problem.

Must be something wrong there
certainly shouldn't leak after such a short period of time.

Yeah, definitely a bit odd. I know the vehicle's new, but check the condition of the diff flange on the surface in contact with the seal. Even a little bit of pitting can cause quite a leak. Also, there are seals and there are seals. How good are the replacement seals they are using? Is the bearing alright?

How's the breather for the diff? It could be blocked.

I'd check similar things for the transfer output.

1) Get them to replace the rear differential, it is obviously STILL not fixed by simply replacing seals, therefore possibly a pinion fault in the first place, and 2) the same goes for the transfer case.

This is a $55K vehicle less than 10K old, tell them to stop mucking around and fit new items if it still leaks after seals are replaced.

Pinion seal on rear of mine started leaking at about 4,000km but once fixed all was OK. Transfer case input seal started to leak at about 10,000km but is getting fixed tomorrow (at 49,000km) - don't ask, long story.

Neither leak was very bad, just a little oil goes an incredibly long way, especially the Syntrax in the transfer case.

Its going back to the dealer on monday to have the transfer case done and ill be asking them to check all the breathers on everything that has one.

Strange that it was mentioned as the mechanic i saw on thursday said the front seal on the trans normally only fail if the flange is faulty. He said he would pull it apart for the seal and check the flange and if faulty replace it, but as usual they would have to order the part from landrover. More time without a vehicle.

The seals they are using are gunuine landrover not the aftermarket Britpart or what ever they are called.

If it leaks again from the same spots ill be telling them they had better come up with some fresh ideas on how to rectify this problem. Or maybe the crew from ACA or today tonite will visit them.

just for info - my new 110 wagon started leaking from the rear pinion seal at 4,500km. Was replaced but I was told that as I had fitted a 2" ARB OME lift they would not do it again if it failed again (they claimed altered prop shaft angles caused the leaks...) - it failed again and they did it again and also the rear transfer case seal (which was the subject of a recall notice) but they still said it was due to my lift. I had a RAA report done that said this was basicly rubbish and they should honor the warranty - they only did after it was appealed to LRUK. When they did the seal the first time they did not even clean up the crud around the flange - I told them it would probably fail again and when it did I made them replace the flange as well as if any of the crud got in the first time it would likely be scored. It has done another 5k and fingers crossed has not leaked again yet. Was pathetic that they tried to get out of their warranty obligations due to the OME suspension - especially when their have been so many rear pinion seals fail on a lot of vehicles and transfer leaks as well. Hope you have better luck!! (and yes, I know the manual says they MAY not honoor the warranty if a vehicle is modified)
