..don't go there. You will be replacing it soon again. Dig deep and get a new unit.

Matt, as I said I put the seal kit in more than 3 years ago and no leaks as yet but the shaft looked OK when I replaced the seal so have a good look first

..OK go for it and see what happens I reckon you will regret it as the box is probably stuffed anyway, especially the shaft bearing.

    hi

    Is the shaft bearing replaceable?

    appreciate all of your help.

Currently saving to dig deep for tyres and Tranny, if i can get away with a box seal and it lasts 12 months I'm a happy man.

    cheers

I put some Lucas 'Power Steering Stop Leak' in mine a couple of years ago as a temporary fix and its been dry since. Others on here have had similar results. Might be worth a try until you can afford a new box.

Mine has drunk a bottle of the Lucas stop leak over the last two years.....appears to leak from the input shaft.Bought the same kit of seals so interested to see how you go.Been delaying the inevitable due to horror stories of waste of time, immediate leaks, get a new one from Allstates etc.
I would have thought if the shafts are good where they contact the seals and the bearings are ok,then the seal kit should fix the leaks.Good Luck.

I have been given a Defender PAS box with a leaking bottom seal,so thought I would try an Allmakes seal kit [STC2847]through it and then do a swapover with the box in the Disco that has a leaking input shaft seal. The Defender box is running all needle roller bearings that appear ok,there is some slight pitting on the seal area of the sector shaft, which I have reduced with wet & dry.
Looking at the sector shaft seals, the blue one goes in first with its 'skirt' towards the bearings, the second seal is like a metal washer one side and rubber seal the other.....which way up does it go ie metal against the circlip or metal against the blue seal?Looking at the one I took out it had the rubber side against the circlip, although not moving against the clip the rubber looked chewed up.....there was no dust cover. It would be great if an extra washer could be added under the seal so it runs on a fresh part of the shaft, but I don't think there is enough room.
I realise others have used seal kits with limited success especially if fitted in situ where they have been unable to dress up the seal surfaces. But seeing I was given the Defender box,for the price of the kit it's worth the effort.
So to anyone who has successfully fitted a kit, which way up did they fit the sector shaft outer seal?
