EGT display vs' Engine temp monitor?

I alredy have a EGT probe and display fitted to my TD5. Upon finding the thread for bulk purchase for an engine temperature alarm monitor, thought "yep good idea better get one". But later thought hang on the EGT sensor monitors engine temp and is very, very responsive. Can someone please confirm or dispel my theory that this would be a waste of money for myself. Purchasing an engine temp alarm.
I'm thinking, low coolant alarm sensor instead. The one you mount in the top radiator hose bleed screw.

    Thanks,
    Tod.

I have one of the combined units, water level/head temprature.
    Here is my thoughts...
Driving hard=high EGT. So you can see that on your gauge and I wait for the heat to transfer to the head.
Water temprature increses(lack of air ect.)=higher motor temp not picked up on EGT's but I get a buzzer.
Coolant loss for me is a buzzer too.

I would like to know what others think too but I'd think about a combined unit for it.
    Cheers, Kyle

The EGT senses exhaust temp, not coolant temp. Short bursts of high EGT's while accelerating for example wont neccesarily raise coolant temp however prolonged higher than normal EGT's like towing will raise the head temp and coolant temp.
Forget external bolt on sensors, too slow to react to coolant change. A direct coolant flow sensor as close to the water outlet as possible.

With the EGT probe, it should actually be pre turbo not post turbo. Movement thru the turbine can drop the temp anywhere up to approx 200 degrees. If you dont see the exact temp in the manifold, your not seeing a potential meltdown or turbo failure should it start hitting 650-700 degrees for prolonged periods.
Most turbos have a peak temp capacity of 700 deg with a nominal holding temp around 550-600.
Most stock diesels will struggle to make this figure constantly let alone hit 700, however a tweaked one will.

I would be more concerned with water level and a good electronic water temp gauge, stepper motor type if you want fast reaction or digital type. Same thing with EGT gauge, stepper or digital.
EGT gauges should be standard fit in every diesel.....

    Cheers

    Andrew

I have the temp alarm set up to control my electric fans - finished yesterday.

the temp alarm is amazingly accurate and very responsive.

in hindsight I probably should have gotten the low water alarm at the same time.
