I need a quiet exhaust for my disco!

3.5 Disco, with an aftermarket straight through muffler, and a small resonator on the back

I have decided i am over having a loud exhaust, its not offensively loud, but it gets old on the freeway very quickly, i would prefer to go to the other end of the spectrum, and go for an almost silent exhaust system, well, as quiet as i can get it

I used to have no resonator at all, which was fun for about a month, the droning and noise is quite fatiguing

While it is not longer my daily driver, i do still travel long distances occasionally and would like a change

Has anyone tried something similar before? I am considering either getting a muffler from the wreckers and welding it in between my existing muffler and resonator, or simply getting a stock exhaust system from a wrecked disco

    any advice is greatly appreciated!

I'd just take it down to your local friendly exhaust shop and tell them what you want to achieve. They will know all about drone at highway speeds and how to solve it.

Its not a big deal or particularly expensive to have a replacement muffler welded in and maybe a resonator also.

Been there done that.. I had a 2.5 inch system fitted and sounded great but got sick of the 'growl' specially with such a guttless 3.9 V8.

Had a new resonator fitted.. made a massive difference without costing much at all.

Maybe someone with a standard exhaust would be willing to do a straight swap for yours...

That way, every one is happy, and it has only cost a couple of hours and a few beers.

Just get a multipass muffler fitted...

You need something that bounces the sound around a bit...

Not the best for performance but quiet:

    This would be better:

    Centre>Offset or Offset>Offset are quieter

    thanks for the suggestions!
i should have been more descriptive, i am kinda looking for a DIY solution as i dont want to pay $100+ for an exhaust joint to do it, im heading to the high country in a few weeks and dont want to put up with the 400km drive with the exhaust as it is

and money is a bit tight at the moment, another budget consideration

    welding isnt a problem

The last time I bought a Walker Super Turbo muffler it was under $100. This is a good free-flow muffler and fairly quiet because of being tri-flow without reducing pipe sizes inside.

A scrunched up ball of wire down the drivers side stack on my HZJ75 cost me nothing a redirected most of the noise/soot out the passenger side stack.

Maybe not what you had in mind though

The wreckers have plenty of exhausts / mufflers for you to choose from, and you can also check with the muffler places as well,,, they'll have had guys like me taking off good units to have louder units put back on,, just tell them it's to get a wreck going on the farm or something,, you might get it for nicks,,

I have a quiet muffler still attached to a redundant exhaust system I have.
Its off a 3.5 V8 county, but a county rear section. Should be able to join in if you can weld.

Call me Clive 0407 525 241 and you can have it nix. Pick up business hours in Fitzroy
