Small piece of steel found in LT95 transfer case?

    Hey all

While trying to find out why the county's transfer keeps popping out of lowrange, dad found this little hunk of steel in the transfer.

It was found in the upper part of the transfer, accessed via the top plate.
It looks like some sort of dowl or something?

Does anyone have an idea of what it might be?

    Thanks in advance.....CHEERS TIM.

Hi Tim, That looks like one of the locating dowels from the outer steel thrust washers on the intermediate shaft. That could explain why it is jumping out of gear. Probably worn thrust washers.

I should have said "whats left of the locating dowel" Looks like its been thru the mill a few times. I would be checking the intermediate shaft and centre diff gears for damage.

I wouldnt panic about the gears too much, that dowel is only mild steel and the steel in the gears in the box are designed to deal with the suzi. You could feed a battle tank into them and they probably wouldnt notice.

The bearings however... the little pieces that it would have been flaking off have probably gone and sat them selves in bearing races just waiting to grind themselves into the hardface. This would be especially bad if it was the bearings for the CDL/spider gears.
