    stripped timing gear

my friend has just recently purchased a non-running range rover. the bloke told us that "it just stopped running and that it was only a $30 part in the distributor".i pulled the timing cover off the 4dr rangie with a 3.5 and the top gear of the timing gear has stripped all its teeth. suprise suprise . what i need to know is what damage it could of done from the most mild to the most amount of damage as i dont want to put it together and find out something else is wrong

I would check the cam and lifters to see if it is siezed, then the valves for the same reason, then make sure you don't have a con-rod wrapped around the cam, I'll bet it involves more than a $30 part, could also be a siezed oil pump which would stop the cam dead, good luck, Regards Frank.

I have seen failure of the nylon gear from old age and a worn timing chain. A 5/8 inch spanner will soon tell you if the cam is stuck, but I doubt it. You may have a bent valve somewhere. Find an old timing set (or even a new kit) install it and turn the motor over. If that works reassemble and do a compression test.
