Altenator Fail in my D2 TD5 - Advice anyone?

Hi Guys, I jumped in my 2000 Discovery 2 TD5 yesterday and when I cranked it up the battery light did not go out. It was not on when i stopped the car a couple of nights ago. I put a multi meter across the battery and the alternator is not charging (11.8v).

I had a look at the altenator and there are no visible oil leaks and the windings I could see look the right colour.

I was wondering if there is any other test to find the problem or is it time to pull it out?

I have the RAVE disc and thought I would pull it out myself. Is there a better way to get it out than the way it tells you to?

Any advice on replacing/ rebuilding these altenators?

    Thanks.

As Hans said. Pull the back cover off. 2 screws will remove the brush holder and give it a clean dont lubricate it. About 1/2 an hour will have you back on the road.
Note be careful when loosening the main power lead nut.

    Cheers.

The main power lead is attached to a stud which runs into/ under the alternator diode pack. If the nut is tight ensure you use a thin spanner on the nut under the cable and ensure the cable terminal/lug does not turn with the main nut. If this happens you risk shearing off the terminal! Dont forget to disconnect the battery first.

    cheers

the alternator in my 2000 td5 let go a few mths ago at 180k, needed complete rebuild, done by a very competent auto-elec for $400 plus being a good old fella he found and
did a few other needed tasks( not for the $4oo)and drove me home and picked me up when it was finished.

I bought a brand new one with brand new vacc pump for less than that fron an Australian supplier and fitted it myself
Did yours have oil in it???? Most diesel alternators fail due to oil leakage from the vacc pump.
