D2 manual Intercooler in an auto???

Just checking that this is in fact do-able or worthwhile...

I'm looking down the barrel of giving Grimmy some more umph in the guise of a vnt turbo, larger intercooler, boost box, silicon hoses and an upgraded transmission cooler.

If I install a P38 oil cooler can I then also install the larger I/C that usually goes into the manual D2s, that are after all the same $$$s????

Or would the hot air coming through the oil cooler effectively make the larger I/C redundant??

    Cheers...

Wouldn't a larger tranny cooler in fact produce cooler air, having a larger surface area and the fact that the intercooler is butted up against the radiator, I can't see the tranny cooler making much of an impact on the intercooler.

Hey Baz, Happy Birthday for yesterday.

    How's the lovely wife?

My thinking is that the new larger trans oil cooler sits (assumption here) in front of the I/C and radiator therefore the air passing through to cooler is warmed before passing through the I/C.

If the cooler sits behind everything then I suppose the questions till stands... Can I fit the larger I/C thats for the manual D2?

    Whats your reckoning???

Good mate and thanks, she is still in pain though, back is still stuffed.

The intercooler sits in front of the radiator yes but it only comes half way down, the trans cooler is below the intercooler and in front of the radiator, well it is on the manual Disco.

    Ok cheers Baz..

Looks like I have to check the setup of the auto to see where it all sits.

Do you run a larger trans cooler in your D2, I know you do a bit of towing 'n all?

The UK intercoolers for manual intercoolers are deeper and cant be fitted to the Auto.
look at Aussie ASE Intercoolers, they have a big cooler to suit the D2 TD5.I have one in my shed, was $1200 delivered,I see they have dropped the price to just over $1000,unsure if it still has free delivery.
The workmanship on the cooler is exceptional
Hope to fit it over Xmas/New year.

No I don't, constant towing in hot conditions the transfer case sits around 90c to 95c, sits around 75c to 85c when not towing or going to and from work, on our recent Gulf trip in Sept this year, air temp was around 35c to 40c during the day, on the long hauls it would sit around 90c to 95c, the coolent temp was around the same as well, but that was going into head winds as well, when we got further south on our way homewith the air temp in the mid 20s, it would sit around 80 to 85c.

I have an EMS1 that keeps an eye on my transfer case, EGTs, coolent temp and also has a low coolent alarm, the only time I have had the gearbox over temp light come on, was on our Simpson trip in 05, the reason for that was the low speeds we were travelling at (average 17kph) and the gearbox and transfer case were covered in mud.

    Hope this helps.

Just seen your post Andrew, and remembered Urban Panzer (www.discovery2.co.uk) had put one of these in.

Emailed Roverdrive in Canada earlier for a quote.

Also would add some from "CEM AW10 antiwear" which again would help keep the oils in check

If anyones interested let me know and I'll PM you their reply.

Maybe a group buy could be on the cards......
